LSU va Va Tech 2007

Just watching this game for a little bit of LSU football nostalgia. The main thing that the announcers are surprised about on our first drive is Balance. Later in the Les years we seemed to lose the balance and lean heavily toward the run(mostly because of our qb play). This was probably the most frustrating thing about Les in his later years. He got too reliant on our super talented Tail Backs. I completely understand that we are not likely to mimic the results of that season, but I’d like to point out just a couple of similarities for the sake of some offseason optimism.
1. Both of these teams are very experienced on the defensive side of the ball.
What we lack in returning starters this year, we make up for in returning overall experience and depth on that side of the ball.
2. We have an experienced qb with very few in game Reps. I get that Flynn started against Miami in the ‘05 Peach bowl, but he still had very little game experience other than that game. Most of his experience was in practice against a talented tiger defense. Burrow has spent a ton of time breaking down film at Ohio St. with very little game experience, but he has spent 3 years in college and has seen what it takes to be successful by watching J.T Barret for 3 years.
3. We do not have the most talent at running back but we can platoon between 3 or 4 guys.
In 2007 we did not have a super stud at rb, but we rotated 3 or 4 guys. Hester, Keiland W., and C. Scott all rotated. We did not have a bunch of experience or talent at that position, but it forced us to be balanced overall. I feel like we will see a similar situation this year with brossette, Clyde, and fournette/provens/curry.
4. A very talented o-line
‘07 had a more experienced line, but I believe we have more NFL potential on this line. Charles, Ingram, Lewis, and Deculus have the ability to be a great offensive line. Obviously we will see how good they really are in game 1 of the season.
2 losses is probably our ceiling with our schedule this year. With the playoff system it won’t get us in, but a 2 loss season would be a very successful season.
I know TLDR and all that, but these are just a few comparisons I found between our last Championship team and this year’s team. I only hope we can replicate the results.

Les was castrated offensively after the abortions in 08 and 09. He resorted to 1970s football and never recovered.

Except for 2011 which would've gone down as the best team ever if not for a freak upset in Ames, Iowa.

2011 was just as tough.
Not saying we run the table, but I don't see how anyone can pencil in two losses without even seeing the team play.
We've lost to Alabama 7 straight times. Mississippi State had lost 15 in a row to us before they finally beat us. Point is, stranger things have happened.
Granted, even if we run the table we'd still probably have to play Bama again since they have the only permanent spot in the 4-team playoff.

Offense in 2013 is a better example than 2011. With the 2013 offense, we may well have won the rematch on 1/9.

That was the exact same offense as every year since 09. Only difference is the defense was a juggernaut that year.

2013 was great at scoring points when it didn’t matter. When it did they were the same as any other Les Miles led offense.

We weren’t winning on 1/9 even if we had 1994 Penn State’s offense. Nobody could’ve motivated us to a victory on that day. It was an unfair situation and the players knew it.

With different players "the incident" might never have happened. There's no way to know how the hypothetical would have played out.

It’s really amazing to me how y’all go straight to the 2011 offense after this post. Some of you just can’t get over that game. ‘05, ‘06, 07’ was probably the best mix of unpredictability and talent that we have had in this century. ‘08 just completely ruined Miles due to Perrilloux being dismissed and Miles’ lack of Qb recruitment after that.

I wish I could've been at that game. I was still in Florida at the time. Moved back here about halfway through the season and I was in New Orleans for the BCSCG.
I'm still a little sore at Perrilloux for getting in all that off the field nonsense.
Keiland hurdling a guy to make the TD. I'll never forget that. I remember Mushmouth, or maybe it was Herbstreit, saying, "this is a VT defense and they are just getting embarrassed."
Good stuff.

LSU started off 2007 in rip-snortin' fashion, huge victorys over Miss St, Virginia Tech and Middle Tennessee. Just complete dominance on both sides of the football. Then Charles Alexander got hurt in practice and the team just never had the same swagger.
That Va Tech game was probably the greatest regular season GAME ever played by an LSU team, ever, when you factor in the strength of the opponent.

In 2011 the defense set up so many tds for the office, or the defense and special teams afforded us great field position. We had some miserable offensive play once Les decided jj should be QB. The ark and Georgia games were both horrible first halfs offensively until the d and or special teams got us rolling. Jj was terrible those games.

Yep they ended up back in the championship discussion before it was all over.

This game was probably the most enjoyable game ever for me watching in TS. Night game + High End Opponent + total beatdown = AWESOME DAY
Yeah I rather watch beatdowns than nail biters like Aub and Fla ‘07.

The only way Bama loses that guaranteed spot in the playoff is if they finish 3rd in the SEC West. Two SEC losses would do that. Not only does LSU have to beat them, but someone else, say Auburn, does too.
