I figured we could use some good news on this board. So here's some news from a sport that doesn't have Alleva's fingerprints on it.

Wanted to make a post to honor my old man, Bob "Big Red" Causey. In my biased opinion, this Hall of Fame honor is well overdue.

I'll never forget crashing the induction ceremony in 2014 with him. We were in Houston for a USA Rugby match. We were having drinks in a hotel lobby when Red hears that they're having a Hall of Fame induction ceremony in one of the conference rooms. So Red walks into the conference room dressed in shorts and a rugby jersey and the inductee stops in the middle of his speech to introduce Bob "Big Red" Causey.

Bob Causey played football for Istrouma high as a reserve lineman. A lanky 6'5" it wasn't until college that he became the athlete that he's known for today. Upon starting school at LSU he received a walk-on offer from the football team but decided to play rugby instead. He says that the decision was because playing rugby was a lot more fun than being a live tackling dummy for the football team. A few years later in 1976, as captain, Causey led the LSU Rugby team to the national championship.

What followed was an extensive career playing and coaching.

Eight to Join USA Rugby Hall of Fame

quote:

Bob Causey - For more than four decades, Bob Causey shaped the game of rugby as both a player and coach. The Louisiana native began his rugby career at Louisiana State University in 1972, serving as captain and receiving MVP honors throughout his playing days with the Tigers. Causey was an integral part of representative sides with Eastern Rugby Union South, Eastern Rugby Union, and finally as a member of the United States Eagles from 1977 though 1987, culminating with an appearance in the inaugural 1987 Rugby World Cup. After the conclusion of his playing career, Causey would continue to share his passion for the game by coaching his alma mater, LSU Rugby, to an impressive record of 187-30. Causey has dedicated much of his time to serving as an ambassador of the game in the southern region of the United States.

I played for 3 yrs for LSU in the late 90's. I miss the game so much and wish it would catch on in the U.S. instead of soccer.

Glad to see an LSU legend get honored.

Big Red is a Legend!

I was suprised to realize I played with or against 3 of the 8 inductees. Played against Vaea Anitoni and Luke Gross and obviously with Big Red in a few BR matches.

Soccer has already caught on. I don't think over the next 2 decades rugby will become much bigger and eventually supplant the NFL when people quit playing due to health concerns.

With the way our 7's team is playing, WHEN they win the Olympics in Tokyo, it'll be a very good thing for rugby in this country.

Our coaches finally realized they could field a 7's team with 6 'real' rugby players and teach a former track/football star how to play rugby to fill the 7th spot. The results with Carlin Isles and Perry Baker have been a meteoric rise for the US in the world 7's rankings.
The US is all smiles and the rest of the rugby world is pissed.

Another fun fact. Since the club formed in 1970, LSU Rugby has never had a losing season.

Article from 2010

And here's a good article about Red from a few years ago.

And another one about playing against Apartheid South Africa.

Thanks for the bump I was about to do it myself. Bob Causey has represented LSU as a player, coach, and ambassador of the game for decades. He truly embodies the spirit of rugby.
