LSU Lacrosse Club -- Photos from 1979 Founding Year
Posted by forever lsu30 on 4/6/22 at 2:48 pm231
The LSU Lacrosse Club was founded in 1979 by Ed Kardas & Tommy Bennett.
Recently Ed has been posting some photos of the program from that time. Enjoy.

The field at Bernie Moore was a turf field back in the day. LSU’s freshman and JV football teams used to play there, I believe.
I miss the old lights (shown in two of the photos) along the PMAC ramps and the fact that they worked.

I played in 81-82. Had never played lacrosse before. It was a blast. Tulane, with their Yankee, private high school lacrosse players kicked our butt.
I think we played both on Bernie Moore and sometimes on the parade grounds, if I recall correctly.

That's pretty cool. Thanks for that answer.

Tulane is always typically great during the fall when all the NE guys show up to campus. Then they basically all disappear in Spring due to Greek Rush/Life.
That's definitely been their MO since 2001 anyway.

I can’t imagine playing anything on that field. Saw a field hockey match there once in the middle of summer and it was just brutally hot.

LSU field hockey or some other level?

There was an event held in Baton Rouge one summer for basically the summer Olympic sports. I forget the name, but that is when they built the velodrome on Perkins. Tons of Olympic and Olympic caliber athletes. It was great. Bet it was then.

National Sports Festival. Essentially an American version of the Olympics.

A shitty song called Sieze the Moment by Bill Wray was the official song of the games, and WFMF wore that bitch out. Thirteen-year-old me remembers.

I also think U-High played football at Bernie-Moore field, but I'm not sure.
My first two years in Tiger Band, we marched on that field for preseason night practices and game day practices. It was hard as a rock--essentially fuzzy concrete. As a guy just getting used to carrying a brass sousaphone, those first few times there were painful.
I'm thinking the last time we used it was the 1986 Miami of Ohio game. I remember the very cold rain during the practice and the effect it had on the female members of the band.

I played LSU lacrosse for a few seasons in the 80s. I played with Catholic High lacrosse coach JR Ball, and I still have one of those old white tops and yellow shorts uniforms.

And the Natatorium. It was in 1985, I was on the LSU Track team at the time and we had a couple of guys from the west coast that my room mate from Seattle knew stay with us at our house on Violet street. They were 5000/10,000 runners and couldn't believe they were going to have to run in the heat and humidity. They basically jogged their races.

I loved playing on turf. You could get some wicked spin on the ball.
