Aren't we one of the few athletic departments that gives back to the university?

No surprise that Florida and A&M contribute the most. Academically both great schools especially A&M. Sadly, this has been a problem at LSU that dates back probably to the beginning. I wish we could reverse the trend and not be one of the underperforming major Schools in the South. You would think with all the money in the energy sector and LSU's strong ties to energy, LSU would be in the top 5.

Because all their donations go into the Saban Endowment.

I can't allow that. I'm going to remind everyone here.... FREQUENTLY... how shitty of a school we are right now. It's completely our fault as alumni.

I don't disagree. In way way do you contribute?

The state is broke and the Athletic department is trying to safe face with the Academic side of the school. The academic side has been at serious odds with the athletic department since the deep budget cuts started.

I got my bachelor's degree from LSU in 2002 and my MA in 2004. I have never been contacted by the alumni foundation. Not once in 15 years. By comparison, I went to NSU for an alternate certification course four years ago and they're constantly sending me emails and mailers (and I moved twice in the past four years without notifying the university).

If they wanted my money badly enough, they'd contact me. But there are way too many bureaucrats on campus that do nothing.... and that's why we have such dire financial straits.

Honestly what can we do, fellow alumnus?

1) Lead by example.

2) Quit browbeating folks when you have no ideas or suggestions. In other words, show folks how to donate.

I make monthly recurring donations to the LSU foundation. Start there.

And if you can't donate, volunteer to help the foundation market itself better to Alumni.

Well I mean it's not all doom and gloom:

quote:

The three past years were among the strongest fundraising years in history for LSU, bringing in some of the largest pledges in school history, such as a $12 million gift to the Ogden Honors College, named for donor Roger Ogden. Another huge pledge was a $40 million estate donation, to be realized upon the anonymous donor's death. It will include $20 million for the College of Engineering and $20 million for sports

Sounds like they're starting to make a bigger effort.

The energy sector gives a good deal of money to the Engineering Dept and the College of the Coast and Environment.

The problem is that the average alum is more likely to give money to TAF instead of to the LSU Foundation. Gotta get those priority points.

LSU's hierarchy is stuck in a Edwin Edwards mentality. It's one of the most mismanaged major schools I have seen.

How can we start leveraging ourselves to really make LSU better than LAST PLACE?

Not exactly Last Place. We've got USCe beat on academic donations and I'd bet we beat Missouri if they broke theirs down like ours because no one is giving money to that dumpster fire.
As an alumni I've got no interest in giving any of my money to LSU, but I'm happy to try and bring others down so we can pass them if this is all about what place we are in.
