I’ve made a LSU vs Florida Head Coaching statistics comparison based on the discussion of Kelly vs Napier and my previous thread of just historical LSU Coaching stats - LINK
* Y2NC = # of years to first national championship

Takeaways:
(1) LSU continues to make coaches and is the better program to coach - "LSU is taking a break from being king maker by hiring a king". Excluding Kelly and Napier and using the averages
----- LSU: pre-LSU - 47%, at-LSU - 64%, post-LSU - 40%
----- Florida: pre-Florida - 69%, at-Florida - 66%, post-Florida - 59%

(2) Florida has historically hired better coaches (pre-school win %: LSU - 50%, Florida - 70%) and they are much quicker to fire a coach even with a good overall record (see Mullen, McElwain, Zook)

(3) LSU & Florida have very similar programs and have had basically the same number of coaches over a similar period
----- LSU: 1955-1921 - 521-252-16 (66%) with 10 coaches
----- Florida: 1960-21 - 495-222-11 (68%) with 10 coaches

(4) With both programs, never hire a coach without previous head coaching experience (LSU - Archer, Stovall, Florida - Muschamp, Zook)

(5) The only pre-LSU outliers: Curley Hallman (64% - had Brett Farve all 3 years), Nick Saban (61% - no need to discuss) & Brian Kelly (73% winning percentage)

(6) Except Saban, no LSU coach has had a successful head coaching career after LSU. Several Florida coaches have had successful careers after they left Florida (Meyer, Spurrier, Hall)

From the previous post:
(7) If Paul Dietzel stays, we might be a blue blood
(8) If Bill Arnsparger doesn't leave for the Florida AD job, we don't have the 90s (when I went to school)

Nice analysis. I do think LSU has made average coaches look better than they were. This data certainly makes a case as compared to Florida.

LSU definitely a better job, although you can argue that the path is a little easier in the sec east. Although that will all be changing soon

That could really be the main take home message of this comparison. I didn't coin the quote, but "LSU is taking a break from being king maker by hiring a king" says it all. Very happy with this hire and it is so out of the norm for LSU

Also - don't hire unproven coaches. Maybe Napier turns out to be the next Saban, but probably not

Less competition in recruiting than Florida. If you keep the Louisiana talent than you can be a title competitor every year. Great atmosphere! I believe it is by far!

Why the incessant need to compare LSU to everyone and everything.
Quit worrying about all that and believe in what you are and work to improve.
Project confidence and reject inferiority

All one really needs to know is that Miles and Orgeron won national titles here to know how plum of a job this is.

I don't know how much it matters which is the better job. I just look at a program and think do they have enough? LSU and UF both have enough to win NCs with the right people in place.

I don't think it matters if one program is say 10% or 15% better than another, if one has a bad coach and the other has a great coach I take the one that will use what he has to the best of its ability.

If Kelly is being paid around $3 million more than Napier is at UF….One has to assume the expectations are higher at LSU…So how many more wins a yr are expected at LSU since that coach is being paid $3 million more per yr?

How dare we compare LSU to other programs on an LSU football message board

Florida just hired a coach who was less than 1 hour west on I-10, so yeah it is understandable that people have been passionate about this hire. I personally think we made the right hire - we went against our tendencies and hired a proven winner at the highest level

The fact you cannot resist the urge to compare LSU to Florida is all I need to know.

Carry on.

I think he is actually only making ~ 2 million more per year - Kelly at 9.5 & Napier at 7.4. Based on only math, that is ~ 20% more, so that is the difference between a 10-win season & an 8-win season.

However, I think it comes down to risk. Napier might be the next Saban, but there is a risk involved in hiring a coach without proven experience in Power-5 conference. Also, wasn't Jimbo the first assistant coach to beat Saban this year?

The fact that a Florida fan replies to a thread that he didn't actually read is all I need to know.

If you would have read the post, you would have seen I had pretty good things to say about Florida - you have basically the same record as LSU, you have historically hired better coaches, and your coaches do better after they leave Florida. Our hire of Kelly was outside the norm for our typical head coach hire.

Napier will prove to be a better coach at Florida than Kelly at LSU.

And what makes you think this? His record at ULL? What about Kelly makes you think Napier is the better coach?

Kelly: 263-96-2 (73%) at 4 schools vs Napier: 39-12 (77%) at 1 school

It’s ok sonny boy. One day when you grow up you be more self confident

You proved your stupidity with the constant need to compare things

What would happen to you if you’re wife compared you to other men
