The LSU Gymnastics team took apart #4,6 & 9 ranked teams in the country in January, two of them on the road. Yet, they remain the # 2 team based upon the convoluted ranking process. The victory margins were like a football team winning by two to four touchdowns. This team is loaded with talent from top to bottom and puts on a show like none other. They are focused on bringing home the title this year.

If anything I would think that would mean they COULD be overrated. What I mean by that is LSU has gone against great competition. So they've stepped their game up time and again. Meanwhile, other teams that competed against lesser competition might've used a larger rotation of girls/not exactly put their best possible product on the floor in an attempt for younger gymnasts to garner experience.

Just a thought. I think if gymnastics rankings had the same criteria as other sports, LSU would be the unquestioned #1.

Road goes through Oklahoma again.
It's all about scores and OU is putting up high numbers too.
It will all come down to head to head in the NCAA meet and of course you have to get through to Super 6 first.

No question OU is the champion until someone knocks them off the mountain. Lady Tigers came within a hairs breadth of pulling it off last year. No question there are 4 to 6 elite programs and a clear line of demarcation with the rest. OU,LSU, BAMA, Florida, orida, maybe UCLA or Utah.

LSU puts on more of a show, OU appears to be more technicians.

You can't really think about this like you do football, or baseball, or any head-to-head sport

The rankings are completely determined by RQS (Regional qualifying score)

Top 6 meet score (3 must be road score) drop high and low and avg the 4.... until there are enough qualifying meets you average the existing scores.

Oklahoma has out averaged LSU so far this year. Now the judging is very subjective, but they will both be on the same floor in a 4 team meet in St Louis in a few weeks.... This should give us a good gauge as you watch them head-to-head

But I will tell you I have watch some of Oklahoma's meets online, and they are every bit as good as advertised.

It will be an epic battle for two days in April in St Louis Missouri

Who you beat is pretty irrelevant in gymnastics

Oklahoma has a freshman, Maggie Nichols, who is scoring lights out.

I think it is very relevant to how things work out in baseball. In baseball, the name of the game is get hot and play your best down the stretch (i.e. Coastal Carolina). Rankings are not that important, but you want to be in that top eight to host a Super and advance to Omaha.

Wouldn't you say that gymnastics is similar? Need that Super Six invite and hope/pray that you peak at the right time to win it all.

Maggie Nichols is absolutely incredible.... If not for injury she was a shoo-in to make the 2016 Olympic team

I feel like she still should have made the team she finished well ahead of Gabby Douglas at Olympic trial, but because of politics I think they put her on the team instead

Many Elite level gymnast struggle a bit with the transition to the college Style.... Maggie has not.

She is a truly elegant and Powerful gymnast.

Although I'm a die-hard LSU fan, I have to give her her props.... college gymnastics hasn't seen much like her in a while

Actually not at all.

You don't get invited to the Super Six.... The top teams get invited to 6 Regionals.... there's generally no home floor Advantage as Regional sites or determine years in advance.

From there the top two scoring teams from each Regional go to the semi-finals at Nationals. This creates a field of 12, which they break up into two 6 team sessions.

What is amazing, is that it is not even the top six scorers that go to the next round on the final day. It is the top three from each session.... Generally this works out to be the top six scorers, but it is conceivable that for teens in one session could score higher than one of the teams in the other section but still be left out

This is how the Super 6 is determined

Yeah, I know but just making teh point what an incredible month they had to to defeat those very good teams with plenty to spare. BAMA pushed them but still got beat handily at home. LSU is still dealing with a few injuries, getting Ruby Harrold into college mode and out of elite Olympics mindset, and helping Sydney Ewing restore her confidence.

There is still a lot of upside for this team before it is over. Probably the same for most teams so it will come down to who brings their AAA game when all the marbles are on the line. DD and the Tigers are due for their one shining moment.

Is there any fear that they have peaked too early?

I don't think so...This staff is doing a great job at holding back the horses.

They are rotating the lineup, they do very few hard landings in practice, and they are building depth of all the aparitis

There is nothing wrong with the ranking process. Calm your jets.

Also there are like 4 teams annually who have a remote shot at winning the title. Beating number 9 is not overly impressive. The title goes through OU regardless. Ladies have a legit shot this year.
