re: LSU Defensive Line ranks
really sucks that our DL is playing as well as it is with elite corners on the outside only for it not to matter with how poor our LBs and safeties have been

40 TFL through 3 games has to be some kind of record. I don’t care what the level of competition is, that’s just stupid.

re: LSU Defensive Line ranks
LSU was among the league leaders in sacks in the first 3 games of last season and, ultimately, at the end of the season. Unfortunately, they were the second worst total defense in the SEC. Right now LSU is 8th in total defense and 11th in scoring defense in the SEC.

Point being, O has put ALL of his emphasis on having an "attacking" DL...seemingly at the expense of a good OVERALL defense.

The defensive line was good at getting sacks compared to other teams last year. But apparently that’s the only thing our defense was good at.

Getting more TFL’s this year is a really good sign because that means penetration and stopping running plays.

I hope the whole team continues to improve and we see that this weekend. If we house MSU, the auburn game is gonna be nuts.

Meanwhile, some guy named Andre Cater II, completely unrelated to Andre Carter the DL coach, leads the nation in sacks.

The fine print is the most interesting/impressive when looking at those stats:
"LSU has the 4th lowest blitz rate in the country"

I want to know how many of those 17 snaps included Maason Smith in them? I'd be willing to bet at least 12.

Recruiting matters. It's the deepest and most star filled position. Wide receiver and DB follow.

True. But flip side is when they don't get the sack/TFL. The (early) stats seem to indicate the defense is very boom or bust...somewhat like last season.

LSU is leading in total sacks and TFL. However, despite that they are 9th in the SEC in yards per play allowed. Also, among the top 50 in total defense (which LSU is #48) they are tied with Old Dominion and W. Michigan for most TDs allowed). They rank T-60 in rushing yards allowed, 11th in the SEC.

That seems to suggest the LSU defense either stops you for a loss or gives up a nice gain...without much in between. That was a lot of what last year's defense did.

Now, it is early, so these numbers VERY MUCH could change. But IMO what you are seeing is a lifelong DL coach...who only really has ever focused on the DL...wanted his DL to create havoc (almost immediately upon Aranda leaving O said he wanted an "attacking DL)...without a ton of concern of how that approach may work if/when the DL misses on getting a sack/TFL. The DL is penetrating like Ed wants them to do. But the question that remains to be answered in SEC play is "is that approach good for the WHOLE of the defense?"
