This is titled as crowdsourced because I would like to encourage people to bring any info they have, as well as warn that I will probably not make this as comprehensive as some would like.

The Indiana pitching rotation hasn't been announced yet, but I expect it to include Tommy Sommer and Gabe Bierman. The third member is a toss up between several guys. They lost their entire weekend rotation to the draft after last season.

Jeff Mercer is the head coach. He's in his second year at Indiana after spending 2 years at his alma mater Wright State. He took over for Chris Lemonis upon Lemonis' exit to Mississippi State in the wake of the coaching debacle there. Mercer's father was an assistant at IU in the late 80s, where he became friends with former basketball coach Bobby Knight. Knight recently made his return to IU basketball, but his first return to campus overall was a couple years ago at a baseball game to watch his friend's son coach Indiana Daily Student.

Should-be Hall of Famer Scott Rolen, of the Cardinals and some other NL Central team, is the Director of Player Development.

The best returning position players for Indiana are 3B Cole Barr and OF Elijah Dunham. Their best incoming Freshman is OF Ethan Vecrumba. Freshman pitcher David Platt was touching 95mph during the fall.

They lost all of their catchers in the offseason, so they signed a grad transfer, a JUCO transfer, and a freshman. Instant roster staggering! Collin Hopkins is the grad transfer and expected starter.

Hopkins is one of three grad transfers. The others are Jordan Fucci from Samford and Grant Macciocchi from Kentucky. Macciocchi pitched against LSU in 2019 and then bailed on noted douchebag Nick Mingeone.

Indiana Roster

I will add more to this over the course of the week. I just needed to word vomit this part out.

How does a program like Indiana, get this kid?

In the particular case of Platt, he was originally committed to JUCO in Maryland I believe. He's from Pennsylvania. PG shows him as topping out at 90mph but I don't know how recently that was.

But in general, there are arms everywhere, and the internet is making them easier to find.

That’s crazy. 95 as a freshman, and in the Fall no less.

Should be a fun series.

My beer of the series is Champagne Velvet by Upland Brewing (Bloomington, IN). It's an old legacy brand from Indiana that died off until the recipe was found the brand was re-established by Upland. Their taproom in Bloomington is a really cool place with good food. And if you're into sour beers, their barrel program isn't bad.

quote:

In 1902, Walter Bruhn, the son of German immigrants, created a recipe for a new pilsener beer named Champagne Velvet. Over the next 50 years it grew to become one of Indiana’s most popular beers, a go-to for many of our grandparents and great-grandparents. It was “The Beer with the Million Dollar Flavor,” which wasn’t just marketing fluff; it was actually insured with a $1 million policy.

Industrial consolidation took down this regional favorite and the recipe went missing for many years until a fan rescued the hand-written recipe from deep in a trademark portfolio. Upland reformulated the recipe using that scrap of paper and proudly brings this Midwestern legend back to life. Champagne Velvet has a refreshingly light pilsener body with some sweet complexities given off by the corn malt used in this recipe, making this the perfect lager. It’s smooth and light, but still full of flavor, the perfect everyday beer for craft beer drinkers and a step up for domestic drinkers.

only one team in the nation went deep more often than Indiana did in 2019 with 95 home runs

Woof. I’m glad we’re playing these guys in February.

quote:

”Our pitching staff is young, but has really good stuff. It's all 90 to 94 mph with good sink and action. That's an adjustment for anybody. Those guys will continue to grow, learn and get used to playing at this speed."

While they’re young, should be a good opportunity out of the gate to see what impact Eddie Smith has had already.

Thanks for the info. I went to Indiana's sports website and found it to be lacking on baseball info.

Indiana has a guy on staff in the role of Director of Pitching Development and Baseball Operations. His name is Denton Sagerman. I mention this only to highlight his duties in the program and especially his resume.

From his bio in the media guide:

quote:

As Director of Baseball Operations, Sagerman is responsible for budgeting, scheduling, travel coordination, video breakdown and managing the role of analytics within the program; amongst other general program operations.

Everyone is spending money on tech and analytics these days.

quote:

Before his role at Wright State, Sagerman worked as an aerospace engineer at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base specializing in Computational Fluid Dynamics as well as a varsity coach at Centerville High School.

This guy is probably underpaid.

As a Cardinal fan myself, I can appreciate the pettiness of this statement.

Great job on the overall post. Only 3 more days.

Dunham is a really good baseball player. Their stats last year were similar offensively to LSU's, except that IU had better power numbers. The good news is that alot of IU's power left. The bad news is that LSU lost its top 3 hitters. I think offense is a push.

Their pitching staff was superior to LSU's last year, on paper. I believe that SEC comp speaks for itself, though. IU lost most of its staff. With all due respect to the guys that left, LSU is a much better staff than they were last year. LSU has a big advantage on the mound.

The series is in Baton Rouge. I expect a sweep, but 2/3 is solid. We know PM likes to tinker with lineups, so 1 putrid offensive showing is certainly possible if he whiffs. 4 runs in any game should win.

A few things I’ve learned about Indiana baseball:

1) They were the Big 10 conference champions last year. They are picked to finish 4th in the Big 10 this season.

2) Last season Indiana won 2 out of 3 games against eventual College World Series runner up Michigan in Ann Arbor. Michigan lost to Vanderbilt in the CWS Championship Round.

3) Last season Indiana hit a school record 95 homeruns.

4) In 2019 the Indiana team season batting average was .253. The team ERA was 3.81.

5) Indiana”s 2019 season ended when they were eliminated by losing to Louisville in the Louisville Regional.

I was listening to the iubase.net season preview podcast a little bit ago. It sounds like Grant Macciocchi will be starting in CF. I was expecting Vecrumba there.
