I was able to get into town in time to watch my first baseball scrimmage of the year. There was actually far more people than I expected to see. I went to a scrimmage last year, and there was maybe 3 other people there not associated with the baseball team (coach, player, etc.). There looked to be about a good 50 or so people today.

It appeared, as it has been going, that the Gold team is mostly first teamers, with the Purple mostly bench players (with a few exceptions). The Gold team won 6-0 with runs in the second, third, and fourth innings. Coach only let them play 4.5 innnings. I missed the top half of the first inning in which I believe Bregman, Stevenson, Katz and Rhymes hit. But for every other at bat and pitch, I was able to record for anyone who cares.

Main takeaways:
- Alex Bregman is the real deal. He just has so much natural ability. He is a threat to make great contact every at bat and I believe he will have a GREAT career at LSU. I think he has to play 3 years to be draft eligible.
- New JC transfer Christian Ibarra impressed me. His first AB, a walk, he showed great patience. Then he ripped a double and later scored a run his second at bat. Finally, he lived up to his defensive hype by making a great play at 2nd diving to his left towards first.
- Katz played 3rd and made a TERRIBLE throw to 1st. It seems we are still having trouble there.
- Evan Powell looked pretty smooth to me at 1B. I think I cursed him because he finally didnt go yard for once in a scrimmage this fall.
- Ty Ross and Chris Chinea both had one runner run on them and they both nailed them at second and third respectively. I liked seeing that.
- Two new pitchers were polarizing. Taylor Butler, true freshmen from the state champs Barbe, looked like a STUD. He retired every batter he faced besides the throwing error from Katz. Butler's delivery coming completely from the top is deceptive. I hear he can hit the 90s and his 12-6 curve did not disappoint. On the other hand, Hunter Devall, struggled (and that's being generous). In a span of 9 batters, he gave up 8 hits (6 singles, 2 doubles). Then after, he had a wild pitch and HBP. Ouch.

Gold Team
Alex Bregman (SS) 1-2, 2B, RBI (missed one AB)
Andrew Stevenson (CF) (1-1), R, HBP (missed one AB)
Mason Katz (3B) 1-2, R (missed one AB)
Raph Rhymes (LF) 1-2, RBI (missed one AB)
Sean McMullen (RF) 1-3, RBI
Evan Powell (1B) 0-1, R, BB
Ty Ross (C), 1-2, R, K
Christian Ibarra (2B), 1-1, 2B, R, BB
Alex Edward (DH), 1-2, RBI, R, K

Kurt McCune 2.0IP, 0R, H, 2K, 0BB
Taylor Butler 2.0IP, 0R, 0H, 0K, 0BB

Purple Team
Chris Sciambria, 0-2
Mark Laird, 1-2 (single)
Jacoby Jones, 0-2, K, Reached on Error
Chris Chinea, 0-2, K
Tyler Moore, 0-2
Jared Foster, 0-2
Geonte Jackson, 0-1
Casey Yocom, 0-1
Chase Rivett, 0-1

Joey Bourgeios (missed first inning pitched)
1.0IP, 1R, 0H, 2K, 2BB, 2WP
Hunter Devall
2.0IP, 3R, 8H, 0K, 1WP, 1HBP
NO NAME?!?!
1.0IP, 0R, 0H, 0K, 0BB

*some figures may be due to human error or Coach Mainieri letting players play that were out to work on things*

Thanks for the awesome update!

Glad to see McCune pitching well. Would love to see him reclaim the Sunday role.

Kurt did look smooth. I wish I had a larger sample size to judge how he pitched. We could really use the SEC Pitcher of the Week Kurt MuCune from 2010 against Ole Miss.

Interesting that Jones was on the Purple team and not Gold team. I would assume he's going to have Ibarra's spot on that Gold team and that'll be our lineup...and possibly Edward wont DH and it could be Ibarra for LHP and Moore for RHP?

Not at all, man. I actually tried to make mine look just like yours from last time!

And, ironically, with regard to both the scrimmages we went to, the Purple Team got one hit in each.

Katz has been at 3B for 2 of the 4 scrimmages I've attended and he struggles with the throw to 1B. Maybe he just needs to adjust to the position, but he looks uncomfortable there to me at this time.

? I have been to 4 scrimmages this fall and I have not seen anybody hit a HR.

I think Jones is on Purple Team because Coach wants to see how both he and Bregman play at SS. I could be wrong.

With regard to Ibarra, I am a big fan of his. He's a short scrappy guy that seems to have a high baseball IQ on top of great defensive capabilties. Also, Ibarra hit the longest ball today - off the bottom of the left field wall.

I would ideally like Ibarra for LHP and Moore for RHP like you said. That sounds great.

Every time LSURussian posts an update, Evan Powell has a HR next to his name. I was being facetious saying he hits them in every game, but at least from the Coaches Reports, he has been hitting the long ball somewhat regularly.

Today was my 4th this fall, and I saw Powell hit two homers so far. also an insane RBI double.

Not much hitting in the 4 I've seen and no homers - that I remember.

No way to know if he can hit at this level at this time, but he certainly is a slick fielding infielder.

All reports sounds like this guy is the first "can't miss freshman" since Todd Walker.
