re: LSU and Brian Kelly are at odds over his contract buyout

He’s 64 years old. He’s going to have a problem getting an interview for any job.
No one wants a fired coach who wouldn’t do things differently, and he doesn’t have to say that he would.
Media doesn’t want him.
He has to make himself available for a couple initial Zoom interviews, if anyone wanted to have them, and that’s it.
He doesn’t have to retain Trace Armstrong to get him another job (and Trace wouldn’t waste his time).

Well Kelly now we see through your nice "good bye" letter.I'd have nothing but good things to say about my HC at LSU as I walked away with 54 MILLION .
Posted on 11/10/25 at 6:44 am to LSBoosie
Kelly is well within his right to want the full contract amount.

It’s not a bad look. He is not going to actually perform his end for the majority of the contract. Offering $30M today or $50M over the course of 5 years is not an unreasonable offer.
It is very likely he will find another job during the original contract period, which decreases the effective payout - the lump sum as described in OP would allow him to avoid the offset.
LSU is willing to pay someone to win. Coaches are competitive, so we shouldn’t be settling for someone with a “what if fail and still want all the money” type of mindset.

He shouldn’t settle give him what was agreed to

Play Kelly's bluff and let him sue. Drinking, girlfriend, not knowing players or parents names will put a stake in his heart and will be how he is remembered as an American FB coach.

He’s far from embarrassed he’s smiling ear to ear

Maybe. Also depends on if there’s any actual dirty laundry that they have proof of.
He has already killed a kid at Notre Dame, there is for sure laundry somewhere.

Invoke his morality clause. You can’t be a drunk that cheats on his wife fricking real estate agents and have that hold up…unless you win

Everyone saying this needs to read the contract.
There is a very specific process by which a "for cause" firing can take place. None of it happened. It would be really hard to retroactively claim that the morality clause was violated without LSU demonstrating that it knew about specific contract-voiding behaviors but did nothing about it.

Kelly should and will receive the full amount.
I don't believe that for a second
When you get fired, it's because you failed badly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He played 400 rounds of golf
Drank during business hours
had an affair
All these factors are a big problem, he should be dragged through the mud until he begs for mercy
Fight for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Screw his buyout, you want to fight, let's fight
I am sick of people who already have financial freedom get 54 mllion for being lazy, lost in sin and sit back and done nothing!!!!!!!!!!
His legacy will burn in hell
I am pissed, and no I don't have to pay for it
but you don't write an email "I will negotiate"
then a few days later "I want it all"
So, he went from reasonable to unreasonable
probably because he is realizing his worth has dropped 100 million in the market place

If LSU wants to drag BK through the mud and air his dirty laundry they could probably get a reduced buyout but it’s a question of if you want to go through that.
Would that set a bad precedent and give the athletic department a bad look? Seems like it would make the school be a less desirable place to coach. Why coach there if they will play games with your buyout? Agents of these coaches will take notice

Why are you shocked? Who walks away from 24 million dollars? Kelly only cares about the money, not LSU and neither would most people who had that contract and was publicly fired. This was never going to be civil and LSU did not protect itself by not having its’ ducks in a row.

Absolutely. Great publicity and all the prospective coaches wont even notice.
And if we are lucky, the big brain Governor and University President will get involved, maybe go on national tv again. Do some press conference, take questions.

Read the contract. The only reasons for a reduction in the liquidated damages are either through the mitigation clause or firing for cause. You feel like he should have been fired for cause, but that ship sailed the second he was fired, and the procedure for firing for cause laid out in the contract was not followed.
It is possible they could have made a case for firing for cause for absence or drinking but I don't know the provable extent of it. The adultery, as I understand it, is too remote in time to use as an excuse now. Again, the issue is the contract required written notice of each individual circumstance constituting cause and BK would have had 7 days from the notice to cure.

He gets $54 mil, but WHEN?
The when matters tremendously. If you could pay that to me 6 years from now, it’s worth about $30mil in one lump sum today.
If you owed ME that much money over the next 5-6 years, I’d DEFINITELY take some amount less than that in one payment tomorrow morning.
There’s time value to money people.
The answer to “when” is in equal installments over the next 6 years. Which makes the present value of that buyout considerably more than $30 million. By my math it’s in the neighborhood of $44 million using 6% interest. But that’s quick math on my cell phone so might have made a mistake. It’s also assuming annual payments, but I think the contract actually requires monthly payments (which would make the present value higher).
Assuming Kelly wants to retire, the difference between that $44 million (or whatever the corrected PV comes out to) and a final negotiated buyout comes down to how much it’s worth to not have to argue about mitigation for the next 6 years. But I don’t think that’s worth anywhere near $14 million.
The other thing to consider is that a settlement at present value of the buyout isn’t really a win for LSU or Kelly. It’s a wash for both parties. You get the buyout off the books but you aren’t really “saving” anything.

Brian Kelly has requested that the school pay him his full buyout of nearly $54 million
