pitching to contact works fine when you don't leave the ball over the middle of the plate and can keep hitters off balance by changing speeds. Poche was able to be effective doing this for 4 years.

That's not really the issue. they scored 4 runs in a matter of about 2 min real time. He gave up a ton of runs all at once. There was no reason to have someone ready to go in that circumstance because he had been cruising until then and was expected to pitch 5-6 innings tonight.
