Losing a star DC after winning a championship - nothing new for us

This might have been mentioned within one of the threads about Aranda leaving, but it's worth remembering a little history. After the 2007 championship, we lost Pelini (who played a large role in our success during the early Miles years) in exactly the same way. Chavis came in and one could argue that the 2011 defense was the best ever at LSU. And it's worth remembering that we have had a different (and very successful) DC for each of our four championship game appearances. Bottom line...although I hate to see Aranda go, this is business for usual for us. Next man up and we move on.

after the debacle that was the 08 defense. just saying.

but yeah, nobody's irreplaceable. you can start at the top, given that our last 3 coaches have won NCs.

Yep, you're right. There was that one bad year when Miles tried to go with co-DC's. In my haste I forgot about that. Thanks for the correction!

I hope 2020 isn't as bad as 2008

It creates instability. Over time it probably has no effect, but the next year, due to breaking in a new DC, it will likely cost us.

But here's the thing: we are losing a ton this year, and we don't have a very deep junior class to lean on. In modern football, due to the exits after three years, the junior class is the money class. This year that was 2017, a fabulous, deep class. Next year it will be 2018, a class with some great players, but not very deep. My point is, that we are taking two steps back next year, in all likelihood. Not only are we losing the greatest QB of all time, we are also going to be thin on depth. That's the year to break in the new coaches.

I expect a three loss season next year. But that's okay. The following year we will have talent like we had this year, and Brennan will be peaking.

I disagree with everything you said.

Our depth will be at its best since 2011 on dl and db, on ol and at wr.

We have had some guys shine at lb and that is where we will need to grow.

At QB, we have a redshirt junior...it’s been a while since we can say that.

the 08 defense was actually really talented. just lacked in experience at CB in particular and leadership on the whole.

eta

this was our 08 defense

DE - Tyson Jackson, Alem, K Pittman, Pep
DT - RJF, Al Woods, Nevis, Cheese Alexander
LB - Beckwith, Cutrera, Perry Riley, Shep
CB - Chris Hawkins, Jai, PP7 (freshman), Brandon Taylor (fr), Ron Brooks (RS Fr)
S - Harry Coleman, Curt Taylor, Chad Jones, Danny McCray
