Lord Help Us! Here Come the Watch Lists!

It's the middle of the summer and sportswriters need something to hype. But can there be a more foolish waste of time than the annual college football watch lists? It's time to know of the roughly 1,000 players will be "watched" by the scribes to determine who is likely to be the named the best wide receiver, interior offensive lineman, linebacker, long snapper, assistance coach or extra point holder. It you can't make one of the 20 or so watch lists for your football skills, you can take a run at be most inspirational. Now the student assistants in every Sports Information Office from San Diego to Bangor are pounding out press releases to herald their respective favorite sons who surely made somebody's listing.
