Let’s talk Max
Posted by GeauxD7 on 11/28/21 at 12:11 am397
Yes I know Peetz is an absolute terrible OC and has zero rhythm but why has Max got downright terrible at reading/feeling pressure?
The guy is a statue in the pocket and holds the ball entirely too long. Even high school QB’s know when to abort and throw it away.

He holds the ball way too long, but he did get rid of it as he was getting hit on the play when it mattered most and threw a perfect TD pass for the W.
Plays are still coming in late and Peetz keeps making changes after they line up. It slows them down and leaves time for blitz identification and such.
Definitely part of it is on Max, but just because they are lining up quicker and the pulling the prairie dog look at the sidelines to get the actual finally decided on play call doesn’t make it any better.

Peetz doesn’t help him with the slow developing plays. Needs to have more 6-8 yard pass plays to get the ball out of his hands.

Max has played 2 years of college football and yes he has his flaws like holding the ball too long but the circumstances he has been under the last 2 years have been horrendous. Everyone was opting out last year , his Oline has been horrible both years, two different offensive coordinators, and this year he loses his goto receiver Boutte. Jesus folks Max is doing pretty damn great considering the circumstances.

His pocket awareness is poor, but Nabers dropped 3 passes, Jenkins dropped one and Williams dropped 2. It's a different game without all the drops. Also. not having a RB chip Dellinger's man was a huge mistake. He was getting destroyed all night.

The guy came through when it mattered tonight, but even with the left tackle getting absolutely abused every snap, there were at least a couple of those sacks he could’ve avoided.
Some of them are definitely on the play design. Long developing plays. I didn’t see us chip the guy once.
A couple he needs to just throw the ball. He doesn’t seem to be on the same page with his hot receivers.

I’m taking up for Max, but “pretty damn great” is definitely not the phrase to describe his performance. His processing pre- and post- snap isn’t good enough right now.

The drops don’t help either, you’re right. We had a lot tonight.
The last drop by Josh Williams actually did help us though. Such a fricking head scratching play call. They were playing soft and we try to throw a slow developing screen in the flat to a walk on running back. Thank god he can’t catch because he would’ve been tackled inbounds for a loss. Worse play call of the game in my opinion.

Considering just 5 years ago he would have been a red shirt freshman and playing in the nation’s best conference and division I think 27 TD’s and 6 ints is pretty damn good. Throw in the shite show with opt outs(Marshall and Gilbert) last year and this year Boutte going down and young receivers everywhere Max is legit. I mean frick how would you feel with this offensive line every week in the SEC? Exactly
He is still very young and still has the deer in the headlights moments but I still think he gives us a chance to win even with the shitshow he has going on around him. Btw I think we beat Arkansas if he reentered that game.

Williams dropped 2?
I know on the little pass to the right max missed him and threw it to hard.
He def holds the ball too long and either gets a sack or a completion. He never just throws it away.

All his shortcomings (mechanics especially) SHOULD'VE BEEN FIXED A LONG TIME AGO when you're a superbowl winners son.

There was one earlier in the game.
Nabers' drops were bad. MJ threw a dime on the sideline that went threw his hands. He's dropped a quite a few big play throws this season, but if he cleans that up, Nabers is going to be an electric player.

He’s fine. Middle of the road. Great quarterbacks overcome situations like the ones Max has been in. They know where a free rusher is coming from and make him miss or get rid of the ball when the offensive line is bad. They aren’t a product of a bad supporting cast, they carry a bad supporting cast to wins.

The Nabers drop on the sideline was brutal. That was at least a 25 yard pickup and one of Max’s best throws of the night. Dropped it right over the shoulder

Dude I think Nabers dropped 4 passes. 2 bubble screens, something over the middle right at the first down marker (slant or crosser), and the long one down the sideline.

Because this isn’t high school and he needs college level coaching that he does not have.

I said in the Arkie game thread that I would not mind if they put Max back in, and I'm still recovering from all the downvotes.
Max last night stayed in the pocket too long ... until there was precious little time left in the game. Then he hurried his arse up and started making it work. He needs to always pretend he is in a 2 minute drill.

This is the issue with that end of his game. He also is late on throws a lot, but that seemed a bit better last night.
But he did good last night.

He was. Nice seeing Kardell doing good last night, though. ANother bright spot in a great win.
