I'm a LA. native. I've been following LSU all my life and I know a little about La. politics. I'm reading a book now by Spurrier. He says he had one interview with LSU but never received a call for a second. Ultimately, Archer was chosen because he was Arnsparger's hand-picked successor. The fall that LSU football experienced in the 90's goes back to Archer's hire.... La. politics at it's best. Imagine what LSU football would have been like with Spurrier. Yes, he probably would have left eventually for his alma mater but, he would have been at LSU for a few years at least.
The same, I think, was influential with Ed O getting the job. O is a Cajun. He loves the Tigers.... I think Aleva might have some encouragement from BOS or TAF to hire O. Again, La politics at it's best.

Hiring O was just not the right call. Alleva should have man'd up and interviewed coaches.

Ed O was a decision made out of financial necessity. Plain and simple. He was cheap, and was already familiar with the way things work around here.

Worst possible decision, but what's done is done.

Spurrier tells the story noting LSU flew in a dozen or so coaches for interviews and then hired the one candidate that was in Baton Rouge. He laughed and said LSU wasted a lot of money on airline tickets.

Coaches salaries have zero impact on University/State Budgets..if this frugal approach was driven by LSU board of trustees; well we get what we deserve...

I had actually heard this before, but never really knew whether it was true or not. One day last week, a sports talk show host interviewed spurrier on the radio and he did tell the story of his interview with LSU.

He is a damn good coach, but I am really not sure whether he would have been successful in recruiting Louisiana or not.

This is the alpha and the omega. All of our university's problems, and all of our state's problems for that matter, are caused by our awful, corrupt arse politicians and the gross mismanagement of our athletic program is just another symptom of the disease. It sucks because there just isn't any way around this that I can see. The good-ole-boy-ism and the corruption will cost our football program millions and millions and millions of dollars over the course of the next 10 years and no one will be held accountable. Pretty sad, the golden era of LSU has more than likely come and gone.

I don't particularly agree. CEO was a reactionary choice that happened to have a short-sighted economic benefit. It is crystal clear that Alleva lacked leadership and a clear plan. When Alleva was squeezed by Herman, he was totally unprepared, which shows complete incompetence for his job - especially considering the landscape of today's athletics.

Then as a total butthurt move, he decides to go cowboy to appease his unjustified ego. A person with acumen would have first, been prepared, and if not, willing to step back and re-analyze the situation.

Of course, Louisiana politics are what made LSU the great University that it is, right?

It is the flagship of the state and the athletic program is one of very few that can consistently field elite programs and still profit enough to return money to the academic side. All of that is attributable to politics too, right?

You do know that Louisiana and LSU didn't start existing in 2002, right?

Spurrier wasn't an avid recruiter to start. Generally his system and coordinators recruited. LSU historically recruits LA kids well and even more so during success. I don't think recruiting would have been an issue. In fact, recruiting was Archer's most attributed downfall.

The thing with Spurrier is that he was still unknown as a CFB HC commodity at the time. He had only been a HC in the USFL and was pre-Duke. Now, the idea LSU Could have hired Spurrier in 2005 over Les Miles... that's a different story.

LSU decided not to pay Fisher or Herman the amount they wanted. At least they tried to look outside the program but could not justify paying all that money and still paying Miles.

Is it politics, yes. The same way many companies and other entities have their internal politics. But it is not an example of quote, unquote LA politics. Universities all over the place have gone through this at different times. Alabama dealt with it when they hired DuBose and Shula, and look at what it did to them before Saban came in and rescued their program.

As for O, it was less of a political hire, and more of a lazy hire. Did he have some people in high places advocating for him? Yes. But had it not been for Texas’s interest in Herman and Alleva giving up so easily, then Herman, and not O, would be our coach.

There are a great many things that can be laid at the feet of “LA politics;” but this isn’t really one of them.

I just sincerely hope that in June when John Bel appoints the 6 new BOS members that he appoints folks that truly love LSU and understand how important the Athletic Teams are and can be to the total reputation and success of the entire University! Just check the changes in all aspects of the School two states over, especially growth! We may despise them but their changes of the last 10 years have reached FAR BEYOND Bryant Denny because of the success of Football!

Plz Governor Edwards appoint folks who love LSU and the possibilities of growth and reputation that come with National exposures that come from truly great Athletic Teams, Football in particular!

It is your time to make a difference for the State and its Flagship!

Yeah, I wouldn’t bet any money on that. LSU BOS positions are one of, if not the most, highly coveted and sought after Gubernatorial board appointments and they are generally reserved for some of the biggest “backers” of the Governor. I would plan on seeing many trial attorneys in those appointments. Maybe they will also coincidentally be LSU alumni; but it sadly won’t be what is the criteria.

Completely agree. Seems like that's part of the job as being an AD.
