Kim 20 - 1980 Blue Corvette (long read)

Forty years ago (1980-81), I attended college at Louisiana Tech in Ruston. Back then the talk of the school was Lady Techsters basketball and particularly this new point guard, Kim Mulkey. The first time I saw Kim she was driving on campus in her new dark blue corvette, license plate - KIM 20.
Let me describe what a Kim Mulkey basketball game was like. The intimidation started with pre-game warmup. To warm up, most teams would work a half court weave with a finishing layup. Not so with La Tech. Kim would hang out at the free throw line area and receive the ball. Then she put on a Harlem Globetrotters display. Around the back, between the legs and blind flip pass over her shoulder into the hands of the player for a layup. Each time it was a little different display. The Harlem Globetrotters would have been proud. The opposing team would peer over their shoulders in disbelief.
I have a vivid memory of LaTech playing number one ranked Tennessee. That game the starting point guard for Tennessee left the floor crying. She had no answer for Kim. When she played off her, Kim would light her up from outside. If she guarded her close, Kim would blow past her for a layup. And if she felt like it, which she did, Kim would flat out run her over and collect free throws for the trouble. Once a team is intimidated, they are mentally defeated. Kim played basketball like 3D chess. And other teams were playing checkers.
You might think LaTech ran up and down the court but you would be wrong. Kim looked much different back then. Now she is very classy looking, thin like a model. Back then she was short and a little wide for a basketball player. After a made basket, Kim would always receive the ball and walk down the court. She would call the play and the teammates would move to their starting points. Kim was a General on the floor. She controlled the pace of the game and while surrounded by talent, she frequently lead the team to victory. After the game, the men’s team played. One half of the crowd left before tip off.
The next few years are going to be fun.
Welcome to Baton Rouge Coach Mulkey.

Go back and watch some of the YouTube videos of early 1980's Louisiana tech with Kim as the point guard. It was a machine. She was definitely the general on the floor for La. Tech. Must say the videos aren't the greatest but it is kinda cool to see some of the old commercials also.

She had her weapons. Whether it was her drive, a pass to post up forward or an outside shooter, she had a Pistol Pete way of getting them the ball so they could make their moves to the basket. I’m not saying she found the mismatches, but she found the players who where in position to score. She rarely made turnovers.

I watched the game with Cheryl Miller and USC against La. Tech and the other white girl(Davis I believe) was killing it for the Techsters . Kim M. was making it look easy out there whether it was finding the open person or hitting her own shot.

80-81 the Techsters were ranked #1 from the first to final AP poll and won the AIAW National Championship.

I worked on the Coach’s show the entire time Kim was out LA Tech. She and Jennifer White ran the show and they were surrounded with outstanding talent inside and out. And personalities. Debra Rodman comes immediately to mind. Barmore matching wits with Pat Summit at TN and dethroning Texas from its lofty perch. Old Dominion, Vivian Stringer and Cheney State, USC with Cheryl Miller and the Magee twins. Enjoyable memories, and it appears more are on the way.

I was in high school then and she was always in the news. I remember the pig tails.

Good WBB is like watching a bunch of guys like me (6’0”, slightly overweight) play. It’s actually really fun and >>>>>>> NBA. It’s a below the rim game I can relate to.

Dad went to LA Tech when she was there. He played football so he was around a bunch of other athletes as well. He said she’s the meanest woman he’s ever met

Sounds like LSU during the Pete Maravich days.

I wonder if she'll bring Barmore down for a run as an assistant like she did at Baylor. That dude has a hell of an impressive coaching tree.

There was a myth going around about a bumper sticker on that vette, do you recall what was on it?

I am not a basketball fan, but i really enjoyed watching tech and nlu in early/mid 80s. Kim was good and everyone knows her, but EJ at NLU was best guard no one knows, maybe best period. I think they overlapped a year or 2.

I was at NLU then...those womens basketball games were a lot of fun and as I recall, very competitive. Mulkey flipped us off in the student section!
