Key, the Tigers’ star edge rusher who set the school record for sacks last year, could miss most of the summer while recovering from shoulder surgery he underwent last week. His status for preseason camp is unclear, too, Orgeron said Tuesday from a Tiger Tour stop at the Jackson Country Club. Asked if Key would be healthy enough to return for camp in late July or early August, Orgeron said: “We don’t know that. It’s going to take a while to heal.”

This whole situation is a strange one. I hope all can be laid to rest for the start of the season

That makes zero sense. Something is up with this whole Key thing

I don't get it either. Makes zero sense, unless and strictly guessing here he had "other" pressing issues he needed to take care of. The whole thing is confusing!!

I wonder if he had a disagreement with team doctors regarding treatment and that was why he took leave of absence.

I really want Arden back and obviously he is a key piece of the defense, but this whole thing has turned into a soap opera. I honestly just wish this would get sorted out one way or the other.

Call me crazy, but a guy who isnt with the team in the spring, wont be with the team in the summer, and wont be there for fall camp, likely wont be in tip top shape for game 1

This has all the makings of another lingering Fournette type injury.

My guess is Key does very little in fall practice to avoid any further injury.

Day to day, game to game!

They might as well go to the NBA rule, one and done and if they think they are ready for NFL after that, go for it!

I agree, but when there is some positive news regarding Key, let me know!(other than he is in school, which I guess considering the news of late with him is positive )

Surgeries that could have been done much earlier in the offseason and jeopardize camp/start of the season really aggravate me.

The positive is that he can probably miss some camp and be fine. Just have to hope it doesn't linger into the season and doesn't end up like Fournette did last year with his lingering injury.

Some possible explanations:
Maybe the first diagnosis was that rest would correct the issue. No need to have surgery if it an be avoided. And it didn't heal properly or enough.
The shoulder problem was aggravated by something like lifting or some drill?
Perhaps Key had top be re-instated (recall he was not considered on the team) so that LSU would pay for the surgery.

It does seem a bit odd but I'm not going to call in just yet.

It's really not that hard to comprehend. He had an injury, thought it could get better with rest or therapy, and then decided to go ahead and get it fixed.

Honestly, maybe this will be good. Gives other guys a lot of reps and allows Key to gain more weight.

If he's healthy in the Fall, that's all that matters. He will be good if he's 100% healthy. Fact.

Maybe he had to be back with team in order to have the surgery covered? Who knows, and who cares? It's obvious he gone into some type of personal issue or something that made him leave the program and not have surgery until returning.

Either way he has cost himself some money. And if he doesn't have a big year he has cost himself ALOT of money. The NFL has to question his commitment and desire to play as well as his mental stability. To take a leave of absence the spring before his money year? Unreal

I once heard Marcellus Wiley say basically this same thing on ESPN. He says that there's a progression of rest and rehab, then surgery. Surgery is a last resort. Whether or not this is what happened is anyone's guess. It could be that he wasn't around the team and surgery wasn't an option until he returned.

This is beginning to sound more and more like a Fournette scenario with the coaches bowing down to his every wish to keep him on the team. No way this surgery shouldn't have been done at the end of last season. There's something up with this kid and it's going to end up being a huge distraction by the season.
