Just watched replay for first time since I was at the game!
Posted by moock blackjack on 9/11/19 at 10:41 pm141
Probably has been discussed but what were McMath and Stingley doing on the onsides kick to end the game? Both just watched the ball go right past them without making an attempt at fielding the ball. WTF were they thinking. Could have been a disaster!!

Yeah coach O better fix that, bc I have a feeling we gonna be in more shoot outs this season

McMath was doing work blocking downfield on one of those running plays though

And this was suppose to be the so called hands team out on the field. They both ran away from the ball.

I don’t know if they got scared in the moment or both waiting for the ball to cross ten yards but they better make sure they are ready next time.

You wait for the ball to cross 10 yds if you’re the kicking team. Receiving team can touch the ball whenever they want.

exactly, that was the weirdest hands team I've ever seen. Usually you attack the ball before the 10 yards to ensure you recover it. Everyone just watched it go by and chase looked to be the only one allowed to go after it. He must have thought it was too hot and would easily go out of bounds. They need to change that dumb shite up and practice it.

The game would have went to OT if they recovered.

quote:If the ball is kicked hard enough, you block and let it go out of bounds. The worst thing you can do is have a failed attempt to catch a fast moving end over end ball and put it up for grabs. Most on-side kicks recovered by the kicking team are after it bounces off of someone attempting to catch it. Their mistake was letting the UT guy run by unimpeded, great individual effort on his part.

Their job on onside kicks is to block. No they were not scared. Unless the ball is an easy catch, they are coached to let it past them while they block the oncoming defenders, which gives the next level time to catch the ball. They did their job

Actually they did not block !

They have jobs to do. They’re not all out there just reacting. The kickoff team is hoping someone tries to field that ball too soon. In the old days everyone would just go for the ball, and the kicking team recovered a lot more. Coaches learned to send most of their guys forward to block. Had someone blocked the wide guy the ball would have harmlessly gone out of bounds.

I watched that play about 10 times trying to figure it out. My conclusion is that Stingley actually made a brilliant play...by doing nothing. He had no choice, but he didn't try to force it.
it was a well executed kick (regardless how the kicker intended) in that
1. the "hop" happened a bit too far out for Stingley to have gotten to it
2. the ball was moving FAST.
Picture Stingley charging that ball...which was coming at 2x the speed of a typical onside kick. it would have hit him in the facemask and bounced straight to UT. it was just coming too fast and POPPED at a really tough spot. it was also coming too fast for him to get a jump on it to catch on the short hop. kinda like a shortstop who has to charge a grounder he anticipates short-hopping and catch it as close the ground as possible or otherwise stay back and play for the deep throw. but a football travels a lot differently.
I know this sounds like a homer opinion but I think Stingley did the only thing he could do (nothing) but more importantly, didn't EFF it up trying to make a hero play.

Worse onside kick defense I have ever seen. I am sure O reviewed this and some arse was severely chewed as it should. I expect this to be addressed and fixed.

I'm guessing neither makes that mistake again.
It's something that should be worked on weekly.
