He just said on ESPN Radio that Whites hit was a stupid play with 3 mins left in game. He stated he hates it for LSU fans but not the conspiracy theorists.

I have always liked McElroy and thought his past assessments were sound. His commentary today shows his stupidity.

Mr. McElroy, most fans, LSU or not, don’t think the poor call was a conspiracy to advantage Alabama in the upcoming game but a double standard where similiar calls don’t go against Bama!

Most fans know that Nick Saban wants to play against the best. He has never run from anyone. The majority of LSU fans don’t feel this is about trying to give an advantage to Alabama. The Tide doesn’t need an advantage as they are solid from top to bottom. This is about what is right and just. This is about the “rule and spirit of the rule” and its subjectivity. The rules name is “TARGETING”. Whether there was incidental face mask contact or not, there was no intent or resemblance of “TARGETING”. Let the players play and don’t alter the face of the game by such egregious misuse of power! All of America wants to see the best on the field! Whether McElroy would see it as targeting if LSU was playing an ACC team is the question. I don’t think so! He should look at the still shot of the contact as shot from behind Fitzgerald and try and apply the written rule! #FreeDevinWhite #WhiteOutFor White

McElroy is a pasty, mouth breathing homer.

That's actually a good post with good points. There defintely needs to be more clarity and a uniform application when it comes to the targeting rule.

At most Devin should have had roughing the passer. He shouldn't have been ejected.

I could have told you that. Greg McElroy was in the booth calling this game and he got the call wrong then. Pathetic Bama homer.

Because as good as McElroy can be, he's always going to have some Bama in him.

He's partly right, DW should not have been in the game.

A player should never “take it easy” no matter how much time is left. The problem is if your opponent is not taking it easy, you could get hurt.....which ironically.....is what this is all about.

He was justifying it for the rest of the game after it happened, trying to sell the terrible call even more. He’s a sad little boy

Here's the thing. By the "letter of the law", technically it was targeting. The problem, is that the rule is so subjective and so open to interpretation that there can never be any consistency to the targeting rule. The other issue, is that although most assumed targeting meant leading with the crown of the helmet, it actually doesn't even have to be the crown. It could be any part of the helmet, facemask, shoulders, arms, etc... Which leads to the question, what is the line between targeting and roughing the passer? Because any late hit on a QB where his upper shoulder pads to helmet area is touched could be considered targeting.
Also, the ref made a bad call, fine. It happens. What is unexcusable is the replay official up top confirmed the hit as targeting. From every angle it does not look like a typical targeting call. The hit on Tennessee's QB was 10 times as worse and was a no call. And that one maybe, should have been called.

Yea, there is no conspiracy. Just simply a bad rule and a bad call, even with the current rule. He simply never lead with the crown of his helmet. He shoved him down. The punishment for that play should just be roughing the passer.

If you kept listening, his lowlight was the targeting rule. Greg said by rule, it was targeting by having force to the head/neck area. However, he further explained that Devin White had no malicious intent and that there should be an appeals process after the game that allows players to not miss any part of the following game.

Same here. I saw the flags come out and I was like oh unsportsmanlike conduct/taunting for D-White standing over him... not that.. oh okay maybe roughing the passer... not that either. Targeting?! That's when I about threw my remote straight through the TV

I don't get how it's 'technically targeting by the letter of the law'. No where does he hit the head or neck area. The facemasks don't touch from what I saw. He gave him a shove in the numbers which isn't anywhere near the head or neck area. It wasn't technically anything but BS on the side of the officals.

I agree with this. He let his frustration with Fitz running take over

BUT it's not a MF's targeting penalty

His facemask clearly catches the bottom right hand side of Fitzgerald's facemask. He was leading with his hands, but his facemask did make contact. Stop being a homer for a second and be rational.
