Jim Taylor Was Tough to Tackle

quote:
Taylor has a philosophy, and puts it in basic terms: "Football is a contact sport."
"You've got to make them respect you. You've got to punish tacklers. You've got to deal out more misery than the tacklers deal out to you."

The tackler that Jim Brown said he least wanted to see squaring up on him was Sam Huff. Sam Huff's least favorite ball carrier to tackle was Jim Taylor.
There is a great story told by Paul Hornung. They were the same age and were paired up. In the middle of the Packers championship era - they were both getting a little older and there was 1 particular camp Hornung remembered. It was the first day of camp for the veterans - the rookies had come in a day or two early - and Paul says,
"Well, I had to work harder and harder every year. I was a good football player, but I wasn't a natural athlete. Training camp was rough on me at times. I was covered in sweat almost immediately that year. After about 20 minutes, I was huffing and puffing - I could barely catch my breath. Taylor comes over in a starched coaches shirt - he had been doing all the exercises I had been doing, probably more, because he didn't take a lot of breaks during workouts - not a hair out of place, he was bone dry and says to me, 'Hornung - you're looking bad out here in front of these rookies. That's not a good example.' I said, 'frick you, Taylor, I'm not a world class athlete like you. I'm busting my arse out here.'"

That 1958 draft was insane for the Packers.
They took Dan Currie at 3, Jim Taylor at 15, Ray Nitchske at 36 and Jerry Kramer at 38.
Not a bad draft at all.

I love it when all the old people on TD can get together and really reminisce.

As a caveat, I may have embellished that anecdote and misattributed it to Hornung. It may have been Curry and it may have been an extended version of the snippet contained in this video:

I met Jimmy Taylor when I was 14 or 15. He let me try on his Super Bowl ring, and it was too big for my thumb. I saw him again a few years ago, and HD still looked like he could play

Saw him play for the Tigers a couple of times when I was in high school. Fabulous FB!

My dad's favorite Tiger. I was 11 when I got to see him play. A human bowling ball. Matchups with Huff were epic battles. Hornung got the press, Taylor got the tough yards.

Met him in the Los Angeles airport in 1964. Got his autograph and he was super nice.

I once heard someone compare Jimmy Taylor to Jimmy Brown....the HOF'er. They said Brown had the speed and the moves to prevent a tackler from getting to his legs. Taylor would let a tackler get his legs...then he would jam them down his throat. Taylor's '59 football card is one of my more prized sports cards..

The only autograph I ever got and still have, was a kid and he was playing for the packers, turned me into a huge packer fan, making the LSU Wisconsin game as a bucket list item to go to Lambeau.
I lived in the apartments that the Taylors own in Baton Rouge for a few years when I was at LSU.
Mr. and Mrs. Taylor and the kindest and most decent people you could hope to meet. Jimmy is a true Tiger through and through.
