Judge Fields issued oral reasons today. Found LSU did not follow its appeal process per contract, additional violations added at the first stage of appeal improper, plus his replacement was hired before the appeal process was over. Only option was termination without cause, subject to reduction (not much) for earnings w/ the 49'ers.

No link, was in court this morning.

Judge Fields

And there it is. One of the most Liberal judges, save Janice Clark, in Baton Rouge. Never seen him not award money in a civil case.

Judge Fields is as straight as they come. Not liberal in the deragotaory manner you used the word. And what do you know about Baton Rouge judges? You know nothing. If Fields ruled in Cregg’s favor then the law and the evidence was on his side. You probably need to keep your pie hole shut. And Janis Clarke has not been on the Bench in 2 years.

I am sure it was worth it for LSU to get him out of there asap and get a replacement hired before the season. Probably helped with NCAA and def helped with having an OL coach for the season. I would say they knew what they were doing and prob expected to pay out an amount. Good riddance to the Orgeron coaching tree.

This should have never gone to court in the first place as it's not worth the publicity in my opinion. Good to have it behind us.

I wonder what his original pay was compared to the 493k.

I dont disagree but it sounds like LSU was in a tough spot. Violations were found out in June. LSU had to get a replacement hired before fall practice started. They could not wait for Cregg's appeal process to play out. Also LSU was under heavy NCAA scrutiny at the time so they could not afford to let Cregg coach while it played out. Im sure they just figured it was worth it to fire and pay later.

Base salary was $500K, reduced pro rata til the end of his contract. $200K in supplemental pay (i think he said awarded for 9 months), reduced by the amount he was paid by the 49ers. (39 days).

Plaintiff wanted consequential damages for bad faith breach--denied.

Basically, the notice of intent to terminate (from O) listed one contractual violation, but the subsequent appeals to the AD and then to the Pres added two more provisions of violations. No finding he did in fact break NCAA rules for impermissible contact.

I can second this. I'm not an attorney but I have been sued a couple of times and my attorney always tells me, "hopefully we get Judge Fields and we will be alright."
