It's the offensive line.

Florida hit Burrow from the blindside way too many times.
Bama did it too.
When you are a QB and you see your line collapse repeatedly , you start to get jumpy and nervous.
This offensive line is absolutely trash, and it has to get better, or the stats will never reflect it.
Mett had all year to throw. If Burrow had a clean pocket 80% of the time, his numbers would be phenomenal right now.

Facts some people just don’t understand football. No matter what play is called it’s 11 on 11 everybody has a assignment. If a mf can’t block by week 9 and he’s a junior how can that be on play calling.

facts. come on down Kardell

We are weak not only on the offensive line, but we don't get pressure on D either.
If we don't improve on the lines, 10-2 is the ceiling.

Lets face I can't remember the last time LSU has had an descend offense line!

Even casual fans could see pass protection would be an issue going back to the spring. A coordinator worth his salt would tailor the offense in light of his personnel strengths and weaknesses. I dont care how sorely we are lacking on the OL in terms of bodies, what we've seen from the offense to date is unacceptable.

Because if a "mf" can't block by week 9, you don't keep calling play-action and 7-step drops to exacerbate the problem.

I'd still take Briles.
He wouldn't run a playaction out of our endzone , knowing we have horrid line issues.

Our motherfricking offensive line gave up a sack percentage of motherfricking 9.03% last year, good for 114th in the country
This year, our motherfricking offensive line is giving up a sack percentage of 7.72%, good for 92nd in the country
It seems our motherfricking line is doing better this year, maybe its our motherfricking scheme

Indeed. Burrow is much better at escaping them than Etling was.
Hell, Burrow actually gave Bamas D line the slip a few times.

Etling was awful about actually stepping into the pressure
Neither were great in the pocket at dealing with pressure at all

Yeah our Tackles are awful. Then again they have been awful for a long time. We havent had a great one since whitworth left like 14 years ago

Dealing with pressure?? How the hell you suppose to look down the field when the min you say hike the line falls apart in like 2 seconds? How can you call plays that require passing and have no time to pass? I agree there should have been some screens or something done but i doubt most of the Oline could even block on screens.

You don't think the OL is missing assignments?

First: who's job is it to bring in OL? Why did a lot of OL (OT specifically) bail on the program? What happened to all of the recruits?
Second: LSU has a coaching staff. The coaches are supposed to help the OL develop their skills so they're not terrible. That's literally what the coaches get paid to do.
Third: If your OL is getting pushed around, there are techniques you can use to mitigate that: you can run traps, tosses with pulls, add a FB / H-back / TE, etc. I've seen teams put an extra lineman on the line as an 'eligible receiver.' You can use lateral motion to guide DL penetration away from the gap. There are options for run blocking; you can utilize quicker drops, fast routes or straight up abandon the pass and run the triple-option; there are always options!
I'm not sure the 'scheme' or 'play-calling' is bad or inferior, per se, but I can say the lack of adjustments, flexibility and versatility of the offensive scheme is a serious issue. LSU lined up to run an old-school offense and they ran an old-school offense.
They got housed.

It's rather incredible that people still don't watch or pay attention to that offense.
Houston averages about half those pass attempts per game. They run the ball more. Just like when Baylor was consistently one of the top rushing teams in the country a few years ago.

Nick Saban has no problem dominating the Pro Style offense. In order for us to beat Bama with that style....Oh frick it.
Posted on 11/6/18 at 9:39 am to lsu2006
Your statement that we just tailor our offense to the players we have, has the implication that if you have the right offensive scheme it dosen't matter how good your players are. If that's the case, why put so much into recruiting? Let's just worry about the right coaches and screw recruiting then right? The fact is there is no offensive scheme that could have made up for the yuuuuge difference between our offensive line and Bamas defensive line. There are no plays that work when within a half second of the ball being snapped you have 2 to 3 defenders about to sack our QB. They had better players on offense. It's that simple.

Why can't it be both? We are definitely deficient in offensive line talent and we have a terrible scheme.
The notion that you have to have the best players all the time to win is laughable. Saban is great because of players and scheme. Plenty of teams win year in and year out with inferior players. Gameplan and scheme can help equalize.
Not a lot of people are on here saying we would have won with a better scheme. However, we most assuredly would have been more competitive with a better scheme/gameplan. If your line can hold blocks don't run long developing plays. End of story. 3 - 5 pass catching options and quick passes.

I think you're being a little harsh calling them trash! They're far from trash but they're for from elite as well.
