Is it a question of Les having to leave?

Is it a question of Les Miles having to go in 2016 after promising to change the offense and not doing so? Or is it a question of having the remainder of the 2016 season to bring in one of the four big name coaches available and not doing so?
FWIW if LSU beats Auburn in 2016 in a disputed game, Les is still the coach even with losses to Bama the last two years.
I'll sit back and listen...

Sorry but les was in 16 no matter what.

Not really sure what you are asking here, but when Les lost to Wisconsin with the same old anemic offense in 2016, he was done. He lost what little support he had after that loss. It was over at that point, and just a matter of when. They pulled the trigger after Auburn, to avoid Les getting to 9-3 and to avoid facing a PR repeat of 2015.
In hindsight, it’s clear to everyone that LSU screwed up by not letting Les go as planned at the end of 2015. That decision to keep him into the 2016 season has created a domino-affect of bad decisions since.
It’s all nearly over, though, and it all may be a blessing in disguise because it appears that it will result in cleaning house from top to bottom over the next 6-12 months.
I’m sure everyone at LSU, if they had to do it over again, would not have made Orgeron the interim coach. There was no way of predicting that he would have been able to parlay that interim spot into a decent amount of support from the public which resulted in Alleva “throwing his hands up in the air” and giving up when Herman bolted.
Of course, Orgeron has lost just about all of that support now, and has hence become a lame duck coach alongside a lame duck AD.

The answer is much simpler. Although Les won a lot of games at LSU, his offense wasn't exiting enough compared to the offense Peyton was putting out down the river. The peasants got restless and staged a revolution, giving Ole King Les the King Louie treatment.
That was a lot of fun for them so now the are going through the entire French Revolution scenario again, seeking to give King Ed the King Les and King Louis treatment and waiting breathlessly for the next head coach to mount the scaffold and do it all over again, hoping that your King will come back to them.

And just so you know ( a Lesism ) , he wasn’t fired because he lost to Bama. He was fired because he lost to Bama twice every year. Those Arkansas / Ole Miss losses after Bama were brutal . His overall SEC record down the stretch was really bad.
Just because they botched the hiring of his replacement doesn’t mean it wasn’t time for him to go.

IMO, he shouldn't have been here in '16. It was beyond evident that the game has passed him by. I think most could see that. Even though I was never a Les fan, I think he's good for college football and he represented LSU with more class than anyone could ask for.
It's too bad he hasn't been able to find another job. Or at least the one he wants. I would imagine some smaller schools have had contact with him.

Jp I agree with the part about miles departure, very well said. Completely disagree about Ed o because he could still end up being a good coach. Last year everybody was ready to run Kirby smart out of town

Les left like he wanted to... a rich man

It’s possible, although IMO unlikely.
The hurdle that Orgeron is facing and faced from the beginning is the short leash. Because he wasn’t qualified to get the job by all standard metrics traditionally used in hiring a P5 coach, he doesn’t get the standard 3-4 years to “build a program.” Unfortunately, for Orgeron, he has to win now, and if he doesn’t, he will not survive. He knew what he was getting into though, and will leave LSU with over $15 million in his bank account regardless of what happens.

He should have been fired 5 years earlier!! That clown left 3 more national championship on the table!!

At this time, do you think Alleva's chances of getting his contract extension hinge on what happens with football this year? Or will it be 2019?

Those boos were the Tiger nation saying, "That's it. We're done." And fate stepped in to save Les once again.
Then he delivered the 2011 season that would summarize both the good and bad of his tenure.

Had Fournette not re-injured his ankle on the last drive vs Wisconsin they would have just run it until it was fourth down and Delahoussaye would have likely kicked a short game winning field goal. Brandon Harris would have never had to to throw that ill fated pass that began his downward spiral.
Dependent upon how the rest of the season played out Les may have kept his job. The Auburn loss would not have led to his firing at that time.

Is it a question of Les Miles having to go in 2016 after promising to change the offense and not doing so?
There was an ATVS article that tracked the formations of every game in 2015 showing he had migrated to a majority of 3 WR formations from 21-22sets.
Most fans aren't knowledgeable enough to know change when they see it.
They just want wins and think there's been an actual improvement post Miles, yet:
The most pass atempts of 2016 games were Miles vs MSU with Etling.
In 12 games 2015 was 100yds and 20 pass attempts less than the 13 games(vs a weaker SEC) in 2016, yet '15 rushed for 300yds more.
2015 32.8ppg > 28.3 for 2016, and also of his 11 offenses, Miles had 10 that scored more ppg than 2017.

No one was clamoring for a change in the formations necessarily, although it would have been nice to see Les get his OL to spread out and not be toe to toe when we were going to run.
The desire from the fans was to open up the offense and throw the ball on unexpected down & distance situations with different packages.
The toss lead on downs 1 & 2 and then throw on 3rd down was his staple for much of his LSU career and continued into 2016 after promising Alleva and the BOS that he would drastically change the offense.
Brandon Harris was a dual threat QB in HS and a darn good one. But we didn't see him do any of that at LSU. Even in 2016 when the heat was on, Les & Cam were still trying to make BH6 into a pocket passer. Wasn't going to happen and they should have known better from their previous 2 years with him.
When we got steamrolled in Oxford 2015 by an Ole Miss team that barely beat Vandy and lost to Memphis (though did beat Bama) I jumped off the Les wagon and openly called for his dismissal beginning that day. We were embarrassed on both sides of the ball and were never in the game. Had I been Joe Alleva I would have fired him on Monday after that game and started the search for a new coach. The slide was well under way and beating aTm was no reason to postpone the inevitable. We have F King Alexander to blame for that and if Ed O doesn't work out (I hope he does), the BOS needs to fire F King, Alleva along with Ed. If they don't they have no stones!
