re: Is 34 wins the first three years possible with Coach O?Posted by rbdallas on 11/18/17 at 10:03 am to H-Town Tiger
The measuring stick should simply be:
Do we have a good record or not ??
Frankly, I do not care what Saban or Miles did.
The teams they had and the circumstances were different so comparisons are not very valid.
Coaches are paid to win, end of story.
Will they win ALL games, NO, but must maintain a level of acceptability...whatever that may be.

Couldn’t agree with you more. Each coach needs to be judged on not just his record but his circumstances. Not all 8-4s or 9-3s are the same. Contrary to popular narratives we do not judge Saban’s 8-4 in 2000 differently because we like him but because the circumstances when he took over we’re very different than when Miles or O did. I realize since it was 17-18 years ago a growing portion of the fan base is too young to remember it and they don’t want to hear “back in the day” stories but the program is very different today and expectations are different. Losing to UAB was bad in 2000, losing to Troy 17 years later is way worse.

we'd have to average 12 wins the next two years. not saying no, but I see more like 32/33 especially with next year's schedule

But keep comparing freaking Orgeron to NC winning coaches. That'll help prove your point.
Why should CEO NOT be compared to NC winning coaches? Was that not what he was brought in to do? Was that not what both his predecessors achieved? Should that not be our expectations?

NOPE....
Expecting an NC every year is not remotely logical.
LSU needs to very competitive and to participate in the SEC CG every 2-3 years (should be the realistic goal). After that, being in a NY Bowl.
and finishing top 10.

Saban started the 2000 season at LSU (his 1st) unranked.
Miles started the 2005 season at LSU (his 1st) ranked #5
O started the 2017 season at LSU (his 1st as full time coach) ranked #13
Now...you tell me who inhereted the better program and left it in better shape when he departed.

You’re right my opinions slant against Miles although i do give him a lot of credit for things. It’s more of a personal issue, the way he treats players the way he constantly lies and his fake political style persona that most of our fans eat up. As far as his football philosophies I’m with him. I like that he wants to be more physical and pound you with the run game he’s just not a good judge of QBs and meddled in the offense too much. There have been similar situations. 3 loss seasons or more, games vs ranked teams, underdog games and games where we were embarrassed by lesser teams. Playing down to our competition didn’t start with 2017 Miss St. that shits been going on for a long time over here but Miles was never hammered for it he’s been protected by the same people who nit pick at Ogerons wins.

You’re right the roster vs UAB in 2000 isn’t what it is now but we had to make a historic comeback in 08 to beat the same school with a better roster so it all needs context. We had a ton of injuries for the Troy game and if that team were in the situation we had vs Troy in 08 they wouldn’t have been able to comeback and win that game. The point being that Ogeron is taking excess heat for a difference of a couple of plays with a skeleton crew compared to Miles in 08s Troy game. Again you’re 100% correct it’s a terrible loss but it’s one game or even a handful of plays that’s all it is. It wasn’t the death of the program it wasn’t the worst loss in LSU history like it’s being described by many. It most likely is the reason the season was turned around, it caused the staff and players to look in the mirror and recognize the level of competition needed to be successful at this university and the coaches to finally flush all the remaining practices of the old guard. What the anti-O people are doing is using it to attack and discredit anything the new regime does, it’s their main tool to push their agenda. We could’ve beat Troy by 40 and if we’dve lost the games we were predicted to we’d be 6-4 and they’d still be attacking him and that’s the double standard hypocrisy of their narrative.
