In 2021 what's a college degree worth?

I just think some of these kids are getting horrible advise. Say a kid plays 4-5 years over seas is that worth more than a education degree. Kids in football really screwed over if they don't make a NFL roster. I wish they let kids go back to college if they don't get drafted. Last year people said they understand why E Williams declared but was that really the correct choice for his family.I believe a college degree is worth more than 4-5 years over seas.I wish the best for all kids to make a living play what they love but life is not a sprint it's a long marathon.

A college degree in interdisciplinary studies or sports administration isn’t worth the paper it’s written on.

This and the idea that just because you played for LSU some alum will hook you up with a nice job after you graduate is BS.

A. They can always finish the degree at a later date.
B. Some may not even be able to finish the degree now or later.
C. A degree is not as big of a deal as what it used to be.

The G-league pays $7k/mo for 5 months now. That's $35k in 5 months, then you're free to do whatever you want outside those 5 months in the year.
There are overseas teams that will gladly pay six figures for top american talent that might not be quite good enough for the NBA as well.
So no, a college degree definitely isn't worth more for many of these guys than going pro and making potentially six figures overseas, or getting an enhanced G-league contract as a 2-way player, 10 day contract, exhibition contract etc...there's ways to make good money being mostly a G-leaguer now.
These kids would be pretty hard pressed to be finding jobs right out of school paying 7 grand a month, or six figures a year. Their athletic lifespan lasts only so long. They can come back and finish school whenever they want. Even Shaq finished up school while being an NBA player.
Long story short, they see a ticking clock on their earning potential, when they feel they have gotten their game good enough to go make money on it, they will go make money on it. They can always finish up school whenever.

A 4 year degree in anything liberal arts is not worth much. It may open some more doors for further education or some type of specific training.
If you were on scholarship and had a very specific job path in mind such as mathematics or engineering or pre med, it would be very useful but not many athletes can manage major college sports requirements and take 400 level math and engineering courses.

Your avg non Nba contact is 77k a year. Just say they play 6 season at 80k you don't think a college degree is worth more than 480k. If you have a bs degree yea I understand but a Education or Business degree is worth alot more in the long run.

How many college degrees yield a starting salary of $77,000/year in the first year out of college? Or even the first 5 years?

it's worth not being disqualified immediately for most decent jobs. The degree may not teach you anything, but good luck finding a good job without one. Not saying it's impossible, but it severely limits your opportunities. What a high school degree was 40-50 years ago is what a college degree is now.

It’s not worth what it costs. If you have a degree it’s the box that is ticked that moves you to the next HR protocol. That can be valuable. However, it is rare for young people have the desire to learn and master a subject or a field using higher education. That is what a university education USED to be. The scenario degraded for athletes. For them it’s an experience in the sport box that gets ticked.

With this logic, doesn’t it make sense to earn money playing ball while their body lets them, then come back to school and finish their degrees after their career is over? Especially considering it’s incredibly hard to major in a fairly difficult major that gives you real earning potential AND play high level SEC sports

Ask any 2nd-year welder or diesel mechanic and they'll tell you: "Not much".

Jackass.
If your child is in that situation tell them to go chase their dream for however many years overseas, then go back to school and get a degree after if they need it. Doesn’t work the other way around.

Kids, stop listening to your boomer parents on this one. Unless you can snag a full (or nearly full) scholarship academically or athletically, don't go to a 4-year institute. You're not missing out on anything that your friends are doing. Actually they'll be regretting it in 4 years when all they did was party, get a degree, but have $100K loans to pay back! Go to a community college, trade school, or get a jump start on working and building wealth! The rich want you to think you need to go to college, but really they just want you to work for them to make them richer!!

The social and personal development aspects of college are still extremely useful. My kids will be advised to pick a college town they want to live in for a few years, take classes either online or at the community college, and work a job during the day when their friends are in class to cover rent and living expenses. Still end up with a piece of paper with their name on it, still get the partying and fun college experience, leave with little to no debt, be at the same place or better as the majority of their friends career wise at 22.
