I haven't actually looked at any stats but it seems like our short yardage offense has been better this year so far. Last season we regularly got stuffed on short yardage situations especially inside the 5 that forced us to kick chip shot FGs that were missed too often.

I hate to say it, but I think the strength of this offense is going to be running the football.

You may be correct, but this isn't why. At this point, LSU's red zone offense is slightly worse than last seasons.

ETA: Going by TD %.

I'm talking about short yardage as a whole. I can remember a bunch of 3rd and shorts we normally convert that got stuffed. Seemed like Canada always wanted to pull a lineman in that situation and it got blown up.

I know. I'm saying that using the short yardage situations in the red zone doesn't back your claim right now.

TD% doesn't prove that. You realize that right?

Do you have stats to support it?

Are we actually better on short yardage downs than last year?

It's the only tracked statistic that comes close. Why don't you give us some actual stats that back your claim?

I don't recall any red zone possessions where we failed due to short yardage runs.

In the process of that at the moment. Seems like a difficult stat to find though. So far this year seems like we are converting all of 3rd or 4th and 1's.

Yeah I think Eye ball test we’ve looked better

But also our 3rd down conversion rate is awe full, so maybe that’s selective memory.

I think Your have to maybe scour play by plays but I wouldnt Expect you to do that.

Yea 3rd down hasn't been great but I was mostly talking about 3rd or 4th a 1 or less. Last season it seemed like we got stuffed a ton. Im going to go through a few play by plays and see if I can find some.

Here are the short yardage situations (3 or less) for LSU vs. Miami. I'm not doing the rest.

quote:

4th & 1 at MIAMI 49

(12:44 - 2nd) Nick Brossette run for 2 yds to the MiaFl 47 for a 1ST down

quote:

4th & 1 at MIAMI 38

(10:11 - 2nd) MIAMI FL Penalty, Defensive Offside (Tito Odenigbo) to the MiaFl 33 for a 1ST down

quote:

1st & Goal at MIAMI 1

(9:21 - 2nd) Nick Brossette 1 Yd Run (Cole Tracy Kick)

quote:

3rd & Goal at MIAMI 3

(5:00 - 2nd) Joe Burrow pass incomplete to Justin Jefferson

quote:

2nd & 1 at LSU 34

(14:04 - 3rd) Nick Brossette run for a loss of 1 yard to the LSU 33

quote:

3rd & 2 at LSU 33

(13:35 - 3rd) Nick Brossette run for 1 yd to the LSU 34

quote:

2nd & 1 at MIAMI 24

(8:51 - 3rd) Nick Brossette run for 18 yds to the MiaFl 6 for a 1ST down

quote:

2nd & Goal at MIAMI 3

(7:46 - 3rd) Joe Burrow pass incomplete

quote:

3rd & Goal at MIAMI 3

(7:41 - 3rd) Joe Burrow pass incomplete to Tory Carter

quote:

2nd & 3 at LSU 29

(11:41 - 4th) Clyde Edwards-Helaire run for 1 yd to the LSU 30

quote:

3rd & 2 at LSU 30

(11:06 - 4th) Joe Burrow sacked by Jonathan Garvin for a loss of 1 yard to the LSU 29

quote:

2nd & 3 at MIAMI 45

(7:14 - 4th) Nick Brossette run for 1 yd to the MiaFl 44

quote:

3rd & 2 at MIAMI 44

(6:45 - 4th) Nick Brossette run for a loss of 3 yards to the MiaFl 47

That 4 of 13 overall and 3 of 8 running the ball. The positive side of that is at least LSU is making teams respect the fact that they are willing to pass on 3rd and short now.

After running a quick skim of play by plays it looks like LSU is better this year in 3rd or 4th down and 2 or less but not as good on 3rd or 4th down and 3. Looks like my eyes failed me for the most part.

injecting myself...

At least on 3rd and short, all field locations incl. red zone, we are 8 for 18 (44%) by rushing attempts.

Random comparisons:
2017: 72%
2016: 62%
2011: 61%

I'd say we're not doing better in short yardage attempts (on the ground).

ETA: I'm going to correlate to, primarily, the OL; we see something unusual, especially for us, in the grades. We have OL grading out game-to-game higher in pass protection than run blocking. Secondarily, the RBs; Brossette runs well on short yardage. Very well, but he's not as versatile as a Guice or Fournette where the opposition isn't worried about him bouncing outside, going over the top, or anything other than churning legs in a crease (which he is good at).
