We all can see that there's usually not a big student presence in the actual section designated for students at basketball games (except for the Kentucky and Alabama games), so I've decided to run a poll in my classes to find out why.

The question is, "Why don't you go to basketball games?"

1) Don't like basketball
2) Can't see from the student section
3) Work/class conflicts with game times
4) Game environment is lame
5) Team sucks
6) I do go to basketball games.

The poll ends at around 8:00 tonight and I'll share the results. This way, we can find out why students don't show up from their own mouths instead of speculating.

I went to Kentucky.
Most students were oblivious even though team was fabulous.
Dudes were 1. Doing frat
2. Homework. 3. Had to work. 4.dating.

Mardi Gras was the last excuse.

I'm not trying to prove a point with this, I'm just gathering and presenting evidence so that maybe we can work to fix the problem. And if we come up with some good solutions, I'm sure people will know who to present them to.

Basketball just isn’t as popular as football and baseball at LSU. And it hasn’t been for a long time.

The TJ and JJ year’s killed off what was left of general fan interest.

It will take a couple years of consistent success to get that back, and it certainly won’t happen this year or next.

It’s a combination of 2 and 4. We need to follow Auburn’s example and put the student section closer to the action. Auburn Arena literally has a Big 10 feel now.

If they are really good next year after the awesome recruiting class, they will come back pretty quickly. The bandwagon gets full pretty quickly when a team is consistently good.

They aren’t moving the student section back to the middle. Students didn’t show up then, why would they show up now.

Put a blank so they can explain why they don't go

I remember days of the student section being packed. Everyone reading a newspaper while the visitor's starting lineup was being announced, then wadding it up and throwing it at the end. General raucousness throughout the game. It can still happen.

I worry that the same will happen to football. Especially with F King and Alleva running things.
