re: If 2-5 losses per year was good enough for Saban, why not Miles?

Yeh I don't think Urban ran away scared...he won 2 national titles

Simple answer: Saban won the West 2 out of 5 years while he was building talent. Miles has won the West 3 out of 11 years and he inherited sick talent for 2 of them. That means something.

That's definitely a valid point. And obviously one of the main reasons for that portion of the fan base that want him gone.

But LSU's toughest toughest West competition under Saban was Tuberville at Auburn.

Miles has a completely different dragon to slay every year, not to mention almost every other program in the West that are at a much higher level than they were back then.

That has to mean something too.

Do you think LSU would be the program it is today if CLM followed Dinardo?

True Saban anecdote to give rantards insight o how he changes programs.

Saban arrives at LSU and on one of his first trips to recruit as LSU's head coach he is taken to the airport and put on a King Air with LSU colors painted on it. For those who don't know a King Air is a top of the line turboprop aircraft worth typically $4-$8M.

After the trip Saban went to TAF/LSU admin and told them we don't fly on prop planes at LSU, we fly on jets. The next week the King Air was out of commission and LSU began using a jet for all football trips.

When Miles arrived it was a national brand loaded with NFL talent. Just look at the 34-6 beginning record. Those 3 teams should have never lost a game. Those were the epitome of the "2-loss Les" days meaning no matter how much talent LSU has they will find a way to lose at least two games.

That is bullshite

2005 was an exceptional coaching job by Les Miles

2006 we played arguably the hardest schedule in NCAA history

Its the lack of improvement. Why don't people understand this?

It's constantly running into a stacked box. It's the environment where both the QB a and receivers are passing and catching plying on broken glass.
So afraid to make a mistake because they may not get another chance. They always play cold because there are not enough successful attacks against the defense. It's the constant three and outs. The penalties that kill our drives, the quarter that the offense just took off, the unecessary trick play that gambles with momentum nd the confusion/delay of game/clock management. These things plaque every game. We over come them against lesser talent but it destroys us against out biggest foes.

I mean Miles deserves criticism, but 05 may be the best coaching job in the history of LSU

We went through the SEC with 1 loss, after Katrina/Rita in a game that got moved, and played 11-12 straight weeks

But Nick Saban would have never lost a game! Didn't you see what he did in 2004?

Oh wait.

Also, let's not forget, after the 90's debacle, Saban was like a godsend and raised the bar significantly.

The players had not slept in their own beds for 2 weeks, game played on Monday night. Easy to understand why they let a 20 point lead evaporate

No way of knowing this but for sure DiNardo doesn't get the credit he deserves for cleaning up the mess.

So sick of you idiots who say this with no sense of history. Saban did great things for LSU. We would not be where we are today without him. BUT he is not the entire story of LSU's comeback to relevance. In the five years before he got here LSU had 3 winning seasons and three bowl victories. He inherited a great roster and was fortunate enough to be here at a time when the school had already decided to stop being cheap and were prepared to spend more. He didn't come here with nothing to work with. And guess what, he won with Dinardo's players.

Saban to LSU is more like Gus going to Auburn. Arrived after a really bad season but there were players on the roster and facilities in place to win early. Even he will tell you that's what made the job so attractive to him.

Again, not taking anything away from what he did here. I pulled for him at Miami and if he ever leaves Bama for a non-SEC school I'd pull for him there too. But Jesus, man. Les has been here 11 years. All that is still Nick? Nobody's giving Jim Tressel credit for Urban Meyer's accomplishments at OSU.

With an annual surplus of about 44 million at Alabama, there is a whole lot of extra money to throw around and that makes it very attractive for a creative businessman coach like Saban.

Having Paul Bryant, Jr as your top booster does not hurt...without football and his daddy, he'd own a used car lot

I know many of you who wanted Miles gone have Alabama envy. The truth is, Alabama is the outlier program. No one else has been as good as they have been for the last 8 years or so. Ohio State pops up and competes for a NC every few years, Auburn about every 4-5 years, LSU every 4-5 years and a few others.

I suspect that if you had boosters like Alabama does that live vicariously through the football program you might get similar results. Alabama boosters are very apt at using the "birthday card" method to attract the talent. Saban knows about it and from what I understand, loves it. Miles not so much.

To a team that finished 5-6 overall and 3-5 in the SEC. I love how Les gets a pass for that game.

He did a very good job in 2005, but there was no excuse for that game, yet somehow Les gets a pass.

Just like he gets a pass for losing to 2 unranked teams in 2007 by many of you. There is no excuse for that, but you'll gladly attack Saban's tenure at LSU for bad losses.

Les is simply put, one of the most overrated coaches in the country. He is a good coach, but any coach that has to sit there and try to flaunt his championship ring every chance he gets tells me all I need to know.

So you are saying that he shouldn't wear his championship ring that he won as coach of lsu? Are you an lsu fan?

This doesn't make any sense and might be the weirdest criticism I have seen to date.

But in 07 we were "undefeated in regulation." I still love that line. It worked beautifully. This thread isn't about giving anybody a pass, Saban or Miles, merely pointing out a double standard. Saban gets plenty of passes for his losses (Ole Piss the past 2 years, LSU in 2011 among others)
