I really hate the new running clock rule after first downs
Posted by schwartzy

It's definitely noticeable. They are not shortening game length; they're just making more ad time. Why reduce the game, which is one of America's favorite pastimes?

There were multiple times a commercial would come directly after a score, then another one directly after the kickoff. The new rule is 100% just to bring in more Ad money. It’s bull shite and shortens the games we look forward to all week.

It’s always about money.

TV comes first. What TV wants TV gets.
I predict two minute warnings are on the horizon.

I can only imagine how much worse the in stadium experience is now if it’s noticeably worse at home.

4 plays a half, per team. It's around 16-20 plays a game

The athletic had a big article last week about how the number of breaks and the lengths of them aren’t any different, like it was a big gotcha. They failed to mention that fewer plays, with the same amount of commercial time, still means you’re getting less football and more commercials on a per broadcast basis.

I haven’t seen any stats on length of games this year compared to last year. The networks still have games scheduled in 3 hr increments, sometimes 3.5 hrs which is a complete joke with all the commercials.

Florida State game was noticeably worse.
National coordinator of officials Steve Shaw said this week that the rules were changed with three goals in mind.
“No. 1 is to keep the game moving, the pace of play,” Shaw said. “No. 2 is to modestly take out plays in the game. In FBS, we averaged 178 plays per game last year. If you look at the NFL, they averaged 151 plays per game — so, that’s a pretty significant difference. There is not a target goal but just the idea that we wanted to modestly reduce the number of plays per game. The commissioners support that as well. And finally, we want our clock mechanics to be exactly the same between every official.”
Athletic article. I misspoke... it's actually more like 20+ a game, so 5+ per team per half.
