With next weekend/weekday game against Texas coming up how would you handle this. After Shores struggled some and was pulled early on Sunday, then Hurd struggled a lot against Southern yesterday and was pulled early do you maybe start Floyd against Texas, give Shores the Sunday start again against SHSU and have Hurd as a reliever this weekend and next week to see how he does out of the pen?

Or keep things exactly the same as this week?

Keep things the same.

Hurd was seeing his first live action since his injury and Shores is a Freshman. Both were absolutely affected by nerves and just got behind early. They both have electric stuff that you can lean on as they get more comfortable. No need to go making big changes and killing the kids' confidence.

I mean I know what I would prob do, but I think Johnson set the first week like he did on purpose, with the idea of matching the second week with the same plan, ending with Hurd being on schedule to pitch Tues vs TX.

I tend to think he won’t be too reactionary, but I know Little‘s performance has to have him in consideration for a start in the next 4 games.

Skenes on Friday against Kansas St.

Cooper on Saturday unless you use him on Friday. Cooper, Shores, and Floyd are your Saturday starter options.

Play Sunday and Tuesday by ear. Previously mentioned plus Money, Hurd, and Little are your Sunday/Tuesday starter options. Dutton is also capable of extending. Honestly, I think they have most all of the arms ready to extend.

Don't overthink it.

I’d run it back. I’m a process guy, and one start cannot really tell you anything. There was a strategy behind it even though Jay wants to pretend it’s fluid. So give it another week and tweak it thereafter

I wouldn’t say that shores “struggled”. His first college start, looked good early then the velo started to fade in the 3rd and into the 4th inning. He was consistently 96-99 in the first and was sitting 94-96 by the 4th. I think he was probably amped up early and just got a little worn down. Jay probably saw that and that’s why he was pulled. You’ll probably see him gradually get a longer leash as they start to stretch him out more. He’s a freshman. You can’t give up on that after one not elite start lol

There are enough arms on this team where you don’t have to say “start him on Saturday unless you have to use him on Friday”.

This is overthinking it. Pitchers do not want to pitch like this & they know that, despite a little gamesmanship from Johnson on occasion.

I think he'll keep things the same this weekend. But it will be interesting to see how we handle the stretch of games after Texas. We play 9 games in 12 days.

Nah I just think they want to be regimented and not like last year where they had to fly by the seat of their pants.

If they need Riley Cooper in relief on Fri then he probably shouldn’t be starting games to begin with. He should be the matchup lefty in the bullpen

You could script W Michigan better. Probably not going to need Cooper after Skenes or multiple times against W Michigan. Give him the start to get his work. It hurts nothing.

Kansas St is a step up in competition. They have 3-4 lefty starters. Maybe you need Cooper on Friday after Skenes. Iowa isn't a slouch, either, but are RH heavy. Maybe you need Cooper situationally again on Saturday.

I do think Cooper as a starter is a real possibility, though. I need a few more looks, but Ack could be the Cooper of the pen this year.

Hurd showed flashes. He’s going to be nasty by the end of the year. Clearly shaking off some rust.

Yea he will be fine. That ump sucked too. Cost him a K in the 1st. Gave up a few dinks but overall did ok considering he couldn’t throw strikes early. Looks like he has having grip issues early

95-97 on the FB

Nice curve to end the first inning on a K.

Stick with whatever the plan was going in, there wasn’t enough to scrap any ideas yet. If that’s the same 4 starters this Fri-Tues as last week, fine. But it wouldn’t surprise me if someone like Floyd gets a start because they were already planning to tinker and give multiple guys a chance over the first couple weeks.

I keep it the same. Hurd hasn't thrown in just about a year in real game situation. It's obvious he has some rust to knock off. In order for this team to be it's best Hurd will have to build up to strength and get his mechanics back on track to be more consistent with his command. It is really nice to have Little and Floyd both be used in multiple ways. You can see Little come in and get a save or you can see him come in and do what he did yesterday. Same with Floyd. If the rotation shakes up any then you have whoever comes out the rotation capable of doing the same.

When seeing the rotation announced and the lineups Johnson used, there is no telling what he is thinking of doing but anything he does has a purpose.
