How would the transfer portal work this season?

With all these conferences getting soft, you’d have to imagine most (especially top) players will want to transfer.
Will they have immediate eligibility? Would the SEC/Big 12 even consider?
Probably going to hurt recruiting for these other conferences

The better question is who has scholarships to take them? Or are these guys going to walk on to programs to bet on themselves?

sure. The rant has the answers.

Teams that have scholarship players sitting out this year (I.e. Neil Farrell) maybe could get a waiver from NCAA to take on another scholarship?
That seems the most fair to me but this is the NCAA where nothing is fair and they pull rulings out of their arse all the time.

Once the team start being around other students, Covid cases will rise and season will be cancelled

The same as it has been working......EVERYONE gets to transfer wherever and whenever they want. One of the NCAA "rules" states that if a player "thinks" he/she is not getting enough playing time.....they can transfer. It does not get any easier than that!

It will look like a fantasy football league, where one guy gets pissed and drops all his players.

per Sports Illustrated
quote:
The NCAA has already set a bit of precedent for such a decision.
Much earlier this year, in the spring, the U Sports league in Canada cancelled their fall football season. Since that decision, Ole Miss has added two collegiate football players from Canada’s U Sports league, defensive lineman Tavius Robinson and cornerback Deane Leonard. They both are immediately eligible, pending paperwork, due to the U Sports league cancellation.
So what’s the difference?
If the NCAA is granting eligibility to those transferring because of a cancelled season in one league, why should those transferring from other leagues be treated differently?

What about early enrollees if football pushed to Spring?

If there is rule actually stating that it isn't in the context you're trying to portray here. It may say if a kid "thinks" he/she isn't getting enough playing time they can transfer but it doesn't say anything about being immediately eligible. That is fact. People are turned down waivers all the time and there's no lesser excuse than not enough playing time. You are supposed to have extenuating circumstances though the NCAA hasn't been very consistent on that. Justin Fields and Tate Martell should've, opened the floodgates to full on free agency since both were purely based on playing time no matter the legal arguments they put up. Yet other kids, Luke Ford, most egregiously, were turned down.

Is Canada's U Sports league governed by the NCAA? Are their schools member institutions? I'm going to go with no. Meaning there's a major difference.
Nothing would cause the downfall of the NCAA faster than giving carte blanche approval to immediate playing time for players leaving places like Ohio St and Michigan for the SEC/ACC/BigXII.

Have athletes take online classes only. Keep them away from the student body.

It would be difficult to take a player this late in the process and actually be able to have him fit in on the team.
Even Joe Burrow struggled in 2018 with not being here for spring and only the summer.
I could only see it if a team had a major problem at a position and could get a really good player at that position.

This is what I’m hearing too. CFB 2020 is going to be like the Wild West.

If you have a DE or LT, it’s not going to be a struggle. Get that player into fall camp which hasn’t even started yet and they would be ready. Majority of true freshmen show up for fall camp and some can make an impact. Joe Burrow didn’t struggle early in 2018 if his receivers would have caught passes.
Grad transfers are going to be the only approved ones.

Not a precedent in my eyes
Who authored that?
Even so, allowing players to transfer is one thing. A program having available scholarships is another.
I really don’t see them being to loose on this so last minute.
