He would have walked into talent, whether he could have maintained it is another matter...

I saw it mentioned that he ran the split veer at NC State. But I seem to remember that he intended to run the wishbone at LSU, is this right?

I think that was the plan but I doubt many people know for sure. He was the coach for what...5-6 months?

My old man turns 64 next month and he has told me since I was a kid that without a doubt LSU would have won at least one NC in the 80's with Bo Rein and maybe more.

We never got to that issue. He died before Spring Practice. Dietzel was desperate, and for a bit even considered coming out of retirement but then decided against it. Instead, he headed across campus and talked with Jerry Stovall. He really did not have time to do a decent coaching search and elected to go with Stovall if he wanted the job, which he did - badly. Stovall essentially had to keep Rein's staff, some of which were not very loyal to him. Stovall essentially lost one season of recruiting coming in almost after the fact, and that hurt things a lot down the road. Dietzel had essentially done what he was hired to do which was to ease Mac out as gracefully as possible. After he had done that, the BOS really had no use for him. Really a fricked up time.

Don't know what he would have done but had the occasion to fly with him via the pilot Lou Benscotter and he was a coach driven. Seemed to have a good idea of who and what he wanted.
Lucky for me I didn't go with them on the last flight but Lou was one hella of a pilot.

No, he was going to run the Split Veer here, because in his acceptance speech as HC, Stovall said he would continue on offensively just as Coach Rein had planned.
The problem was, we didn't have the personnel to run the Veer and Stovall ended up junking it mid season.

Don't know what Bo Rein would've done for LSU. I was very young at the time. I do know that Stovall gets a bad rap overall when he wasn't really ready to be to coach for LSU. Still had some good moments, but just wasn't fair to anyone really.

I agree and it pisses me off to hear "LSU people" bash him. Stovall is a favorite son of LSU and answered the call to duty for his alma mater in a time of need. FTR, he brought more talent to LSU than anyone prior to the golden age (2000 - 2013).

My Dad always brings this up and he's always pretty confident Rein was a solid coach with some great ideas who was ahead of his time. He thinks LSU could've really become something bigger at that time.
Instead, a tragedy, lost time/recruits and LSU loses ground for years. Just a weird piece of history.
