While we're on hypotheticals

8-2-1 his first season, followed by 3 consecutive national championships. It's a shame he passed.

Everything I've ever read about Bo Rein begins and ends with determination and drive. While those attributes can't guarantee success I do like them in a head coach.

Who knows
But my guess is the ppl that did coach here after him would have never coached here:
Arnsbarger, archer, hallman, dinardo, saban, miles all somewhere else or no where

Probably would have been fired by Bob Broadhead
when he became AD and replaced by Bill Arnsbarger.

If rein lives I doubt the dietzel ad drama happens
Everything would be different, no telling for better or worse

Better ground game than air game

Actually, he would have probably coached at LSU till his dream job at Ohio State was open.

That means he'd have been here at least 8 years (Earl Bruce didn't really hit the hot seat until '87, I believe), and would have to be winning 9-10 games, if not competing for NCs, on the regular.

The Golden age was derailed on his death! Such high expectations. Who knows what the time line would have looked like if he would have lived. Sabun... Les ..et al.

Interesting discussion. So if Rein would have gone to OSU in 1988 to replace Earl Bruce, and assuming Rein had done well at LSU and made it a highly desirable job, who would have been the short list candidates to get the LSU job in 1988?

all speculation. no clue on how well of a recruiter he would had been down here. wouldn't of had the kind of sucess that Miles is having right now, IMO.

My 20/20 hindsight crystal ball tells me Bo Rein's record would have been:
1980: 11-0
1981: 11-0
1982: 11-0
1983: 11-0
1984: hired as Bama coach
1980: 11-0
1981: 11-0
1982: 11-0
1983: 11-0
1984: hired as Bama coach

Please note that every coach on Coach Stovall's staff his first 2 years were Bo Rein guys. Coach Nix joined the staff in year 2 of Coach Stovall's tenure as an OL coach while Mac Brown replaced Bob Gatling as OC and Coach Nix replaced Greg Williams as DC before year 3. Rein was a split backfield veer guy who ran the crap out of Ted Brown at NC State.
