If I’m hearing correct, Bo Pelini is great a blitzing and stopping the run. Well with the pass happy SEC how does his strategy stack up? My only worry this year feel the offense can play with anyone! Geaux Tigahs

He worked In the big 12 for a while and had some elite defenses at Nebraska.

We need to get our DL up to champions quality.

If you can’t get pressure with 4 you’re gonna get burnt eventually

Orgeron feels that when you have players in depth the 4 -3 is better at stopping the run and putting pressure on the QB. Pelini also believes this. That’s why they go good together. They believe they have the talent. Since we have lost Farrell, Thomas, Shelvin and Brooks it has taken a hit in depth.

Pelini as this all out blitzing DC is just the latest Rant myth. He’s a shell 3 guy but he’s also a 4-3 guy which signals that Orgeron will have a lot more influence on the D now. Orgeron has worked in much better systems than what Pelinis produced so let’s hope we look more like some of the USC/Miami flavored defenses than what Pelini’s put out over the past decade.

In the present day, many have now doubted Pelini’s scheme working in the modern SEC. Moreover, the transition from Dave Aranda to Pelini is totally radical. Exploring Pelini’s return to the Bayeux, where once again LSU reigns supreme, naturally led to links to the Seahawks.

The obvious is that Pelini is essentially running a slightly tweaked, college-version of Pete Carroll’s defense. The schematic influence of Carroll, himself a disciple of Monte Kiffin’s Tampa 2, is obvious in every Pelini resource I’ve looked at. It’s also evident in Pelini’s résumé
.

Bo is going to run Pete Carroll's defense

That’s exactly what I said, O worked for Carroll and hiring a 4-3 DC allows O to get more involved between the lines on something he can really help us out with. Make no mistake about it that’s why he was hired.

That was an entirely different era of football. Pelini hasn’t fielded a competitive defense on the power5 level in nearly a decade and wasn’t in demand at all. Orgeron hired him so that he could put his personal imprint on the D. O is a very good Dline coach and we have elite secondary coaches, Pelini isn’t a LB guru so why was he hired? Because he had a good run with a defense somebody else built 15 years ago? No he’s there to babysit during the week while O has other responsibilities, this will be Orgerons defense.

We lost much of the Dline. We got to stop the run first. That is a concern. They will run clock and keep this talked about offense on the sline.
LB group has to play very well.

Agree. Was not a fan of the Pelini hire either for some of the reasons you point out. With that being said, I didn’t like the O hire either. With the losses to opt outs and NFL we are going to struggle I’m afraid. We still have tons of talent tho but it will benefit us more next year. Hopefully I have a second helping of Crow to eat

Pelini is not reinventing the wheel here
Aranda had been here long enough that teams were very familiar with his tendencies
I think a new style benefits LSU
Was Steele’s defense at LSU all that bad
It was lack of Chavis recruiting more than anything
Aranda and o did a good job of upgrading talent on dline but they lost dline recruits because of arandas scheme
Look at what Steele has done at auburn it’s been impressive

the trend towards spread offense and mobile QBs has been happening at all levels and all conferences, so it's not like pelini never had to face it as HC of YSU

furthermore, you don't think he watched all the games and kept up with latest inventions? He will be fine.

he wouldn't have taken job if he felt he was too stale.

The only season Steele has outperformed Aranda was last year while we had 7-8 starters out or injured 2/3 of the season. Once we were healthy we were an elite defense. My post isn’t about predicting any outcome it’s about a phony narrative created by this board. Pelini isn’t a Greg Williams style DC who blitzes all the time and one poster even gave examples of him trying to copy Pete Carroll’s defense, a coach who’s almost always in the bottom 5 of blitzing NFL defenses. You couple that with where Pelini was, his performance of late and Orgeron starting to assume more control on D even last season and it’s easy to see what’s happening. IT’S NOT A BAD THING, fit and control here is likely good for Orgeron. But if we have growing pains our fans will bitch and scream about blitzing and false advertising when in fact they created the falsity.
