How much did the old style of offense cover up the defense?

It's a great question.
Running the ball, even on 3rd down, and punting. It just killed the clock and kept the defense off the field.
I have not been impressed with the play of the defense on the field in a few years. But now they are on the field a lot more and it is showing up.
I guess you take the good with the bad with a high octane offense

That would make sense if the defensive woes last night were in the 2nd half, after alot of plays had been run but the defense looked like shite on the first two drives of the game so being on the field was not an issue. The longer they were on the field last night, the better they played.

So our plethora of short three and outs with the old offense covered up the defense??

The LSU defense is now facing many more high-octane offenses now than on the past.

The Spread/RPO is the Great Equalizer.

Our old offense caused the defense to be on the field a lot too with 3 and outs

For many years, I think, it hurt the defense because the O was often 3-and-out. The D spent eay too much time O the field.

It doesn't work for the UT game either. We led in TOP at the half and the 19 play drive on UT's first possession of the 2nd half is when TOP turned.

nope. Teams with inferior talent want to shorten games.

If you have better talent, like we do in nearly all our games you want more possessions so your talent advantage has more time to show.

I’m always astounded that fans bitch about scoring too fast. Hell, I’d be happy with a 1 play, 80 yard drive every time we get the ball.

^^^ Exactly This!!! ^^^

Our new offense might be on the field as long as our old 3-and-out offense, but now we have 7 more points to show for it instead of having to rely 100% on the defense to keep it close.

The defense definitely needs to make some corrections- I won't dispute that. But when you compare their total body of work this season to other Top10 teams defenses, it's not entirely dissimilar.

It could be as simple as playing less zone and manning up more on the back end... although that puts a lot more weight on very young DBs. The more frequent zones and Tampa2's/Cover3's we've been seeing may be the result of younger DBs not showing in practice that they're fully ready to man up a majority of the time.

That's just speculation on my part but I'm one of the seemingly few left here that actually believes Aranda is still one of the best at what he does. The game is changing, and he's a smart guy who's adapting with it.

Upon a second look, the defensive game plan was actually good in both halves last night. The difference was that we brought a bit more pressure in the second half... and our defenders came out very obviously pissed off and on a mission after halftime. It was impossible to ignore, even from the first NSU possession of the second half, that LSU came out with that mean streak that we've grown accustomed to seeing them have.

Couldn't agree more. Shitty offense results in a tired defense. Great offense results in a tired defense plus points plus you don't have to rely on one aspect of the game.

There is one difference however...

Many many times in the past our offense took the field with the GOAL being to flip the field to help the defense.

Now it takes the field with the goal to get points.
