How many people here know what its like to go to a bigtime college football game

and not be bombarded with the TV people stopping play, replay officials stopping the game, commercials blaring over the loud speaker, commercials on the big screen, and all the other crap fans put up with now?
What you see today is what made the Ath. Dept. rich, but it is not what made college football a great spectacle.
A game use to be fast paced, full of drama, with fans afraid to get up and go to the concession stands because they were worried that they might miss a key play, a TO, or a big score.
Sure you see bits and pieces of that still, but now after a big TO you get a five minute delay as people at home watch car commercials and you watch the Texaco cars on the big screen or hear the guy on the PA tell you about who is sponsoring the game.
The players are better than ever, they are tremendous athletes that train year round now. I realize that, it's just a shame they aren't put first and foremost and that the fans in the stadium have to put up with all the other nonsense to watch them play.

1997 Florida vs LSU is about as pure as it gets, IMO.

Ole Miss games in the '60s were off the charts fun.

Games today are orchestrated theater designed to maximize revenue. The play itself is largely irrelevant.

amen brother.
today's game has really gone downhill as an entertaining experience. money is ruining college football. all we're getting out of it is more pretty buildings (facilities, excuse me), nicer fricking locker rooms and players lounges and HC's making 5 mil per year.
give me the good ole' days in college football anyday. where attending was pretty much the only way you could see your team play and if you couldn't go listen to it on the radio. a great radio announcer was fun to listen to; it is an art that has also gone downhill.
you young whippersnappers can make fun all you want to but I'm sorry you missed the college game when it was like that. if you had, you would agree with me. but you can be proud of our "facility's" (frick the actual academics)

I went to the LSU vs Bama at Tuscaloosa in 2011 and I could remember it lasting forever. Fun game though

I guess the biggest game I went to was 03 Georgia game. There was also a Fla game that LSU won in the fourth. We missed it because my then wife got sick in the third. I guess I've been to a few big games.

Just pulling a not-so-famous game out of the hat, Kentucky 1996 in TS.
Kevin-Faulk-led LSU won, 43-13. With about a couple minutes left, Kentucky was driving.
The house was still full and rocking, and the crowd was loud, imploring the D not to let Kentucky score 20.
I'll never forget the full south end zone crowd standing in unison and screaming with two minutes left to go to stop a meaningless Kentucky drive.

Glad to say I was in attendance.
No piped in commercials, just Dan Borne spouting off something about Acadian Ambulance or Louisiana Lottery or Brady Ball.

I know, right? Wasn't that a glorious day?

I'm not sure how old you are but games back in late 60's when I started attending would be considered boring to today's younger audience. There were very few commercial moments. I do remember the "Butch Baum" commercials on the PA system. It was only pure football. I must admit it's more entertaining with all the stuff going on. The time out for TV gets aggravating thou.
