I have not seen him mentioned a whole lot, but our tight end #82 Irv Smith has been a weapon for Bama this year. He is 5th on the team in yards per catch, but 52nd in the nation.

His stats - 22 receptions, 384 yards, 17.5 ypr, and 5 TDs.

I know LSU uses White a good bit to pressure the QB, and also Delpit as I believe he leads you in tackles for loss. Do you guys think this philosophy, if used against Bama, will leave you vulnerable a bit maybe in the middle of the field, and especially to Smith. Irv is a tough cover for a linebacker.

Again, how have you fared against Tight Ends?

Haven’t really had to defend a tight end but I think our linebackers are athletic enough to be able to cover him. It won’t be a mismatch like most teams y’all face against so it should be a pretty good matchup to see on the field

It depends on who covers him. The more I read about all of Bamas weapons the more I believe we will play a ton of zone.

Will definitely be an interesting part of this weekends game. I havent noticed our opponents using TEs against us, but could definitely be something to watch.

Has your 3rd string QB taken any meaningful snaps?

Georgia’s snuck out a few times on wheel route but our linebackers and safeties are individually good at defending tight ends. Different personnel obviously but the OJ Howard’s and Even Ingrams never excelled against us and often were non-existent. Even wide receivers that have had good games against us this year have been on winning 50/50 balls. I haven’t seen a player yet WR/RB/TE continually get separation on our personnel.

I think that may be true as well. As I mentioned, our top 4 WRs and TE Smith are all in the Top 52 in the nation in yards per catch. Tua can get them the ball in position to make plays after the catch.

I mentioned earlier in the week would LSU do what no one else has tried this year - namely deep safeties, play a lot of zone, keep everything in front of you and make Bama take shorter stuff and drive the ball down the field? Bama has feasted on big plays this year

I think defending Smith with be one of the biggest keys to the game if we're going to pull out the win. He's there big X factor on offense. I'm comfortable with our corners against their receivers. If we're going to use Delpit in the box and as a blitzer, I feel a lot less comfortable being able to defend Smith.

If he's lined up on the line , in close, force him to block longer than he wants too. If he engages to block, lock him up.

I agree with you but stats against your competition isn’t going to scare our DBs or DC. Frankly your QB and receivers have never seen a defensive backfield like ours.

We’ll see who wins.

Bama has out schemed us with the tight end starting in the championship game January 2012. In that game they threw a simple 3 to 5 yard out route to the tight end and killed us. They have continued to do,so.

Watching a couple of old LSUmBama games. We out schemed them by lining up josh Reid or Tony moss or skyler green in the backfield and getting a match up with a linebacker. Probably cannot do that in today’s game.

Well there most recent matchups included a 1 for -3 and 3 for 15 outing for Howard and Engram, respectively. They were both first rounders. Engram did have 55 plus a tudd 2 years ago. But OJ had under 20 yards his sophomore season In a game they won handily. Like I said, tight ends haven’t affected us as much as other positions.

You do realize our offense and defense practice see each other every day?

Yes, and his point still stands, Alabama has not seen a defensive backfield as good as LSU's yet this season.
