we did have an all sec linebacker

I think we’re closer than people thing.

DL recruiting and coaching has improved

We need some safeties.

At least 8 players. 2 linemen, 2 LBs, 2 safeties, and 2 corners.

I think we have 6 coming in this next season.

we're not that far. Look at Penn State. they had that one defenseive end that made all the difference. if he hadn't been hurt in his right shoulder and could've have rushed from both sides Penn State probably wins that game. he was a wrecker. you get one stud at corner and another at safety, one star at dt, one at de, with what we've got.... a couple of playmakers and we have the potential.

Two damned good safeties and a sprinkle of swagger.

Maybe not too far off if we could just consistently tackle. How many times have we had players in position to make the play and they whiff?

This - Downs and Ransom are elite for OSU on the backend and you see how much of a difference they make. LSU is light years away from that safety play and hasn’t been close since 2019.

The portal additions improve our team, but we are not close to the talent on the field last night, especially on D. Both teams were nasty in the trenches and full of good tacklers.

Your answer is a year away.

Sark took the Texas job in 2021. At that time, Texas’ defense was soft, non-physical, not that talented. Basically, at same level as this years defense. By 2023, Texas had a strong, physical, talented defense. Having Bo Davis on his staff for 2 years really helped gather talent, and develop that talent on the D-line.

With the coaching staff we in place now, two recruiting classes in place, and a strong portal class coming in, we are almost there now.

Not that far.

The needs as I saw them were:

DT

Safety

Corner

Not having a legit DT killed the defense last year.

It meant that the linebackers were mostly utilized in run blitz packages rather than simply reading and reacting. In short, they were out of place at times due to the circumstances. That meant big plays (especially against mobile qb’s).

If containment was broken, that meant that the safety’s were attempting tackles in the open field (never ideal). Given how weak the safeties were already, that situation REALLY exacerbated things.

As for corner, a serviceable (next level?) starter needs to be replaced, and hopefully improved upon.

TLDR

We signed a slew of DT’s including a block eating run stuffer with legit experience. We also have a legit DT returning from injury. Lastly, Corner looks to be okay at this point, so signing a plug and play safety would totally change the fortunes of the LSU D imho.

Great players make average players better. One or two monsters change everything.

Next year. We comin. And BK is taking receipts.

What team do you actually root for?

If Baker et al improve the defense from 24 to 25 like they did from 23 to 24 we should be pretty damn stout on that side of the ball.

This team has way less question marks than last years imo

While true, I would be happy with players that are effective.

We will see, but I’m bullish on the Tigers.

Hard to say. They are building for sure and have added some good recruits and portal adds. I think a even bigger issue is they don't seem to have the same mean streak that these other teams have.

Notice how tough and aggressive ND plays now?
Just maybe the longer than normal time off (rest) between games is contributing to that?

I’m a Texas grad/fan but have 2 kids at LSU. I can’t speak to the DBs which remains LSU’s biggest liability, but Bo Davis is the fricking man and as long as you have him the DL results will follow.

Between recruiting classes and portal I’d be bullish on LSU next year. Defense makes same improvement next year relative to what they did from 23-24 combined with the (likely) best returning QB in college football and they can win a lot of games.

Simmons would have made a huge difference for LSU and while I’m glad he’s at Texas if his brother weren’t special needs I think he would have signed with the Tigers.

A long way. We are only missing coaching, scheme, talent and attitude.

A little bit of experience and a coach that prioritizes strength and physicality. I think we're quickly closing the talent gap with next years team, but it'll be young talent.

nd we already improved a good bit on 2024.

there was only one way to go after 2023. That's not necessarily a compliment. We are far off of Texas and OSU defense. We have been far off for the last 5 years in a row.
