I took a look at how Breein Tyree scored a career high 36 this past Saturday night against LSU, specifically what LSU could have done better against him.

I actually thought they did a better in the first half defensively, because in the 2nd half Ole Miss went heavy ball screen and because of the attention LSU was giving Tyree, he hurt them in other ways (while also still putting the ball in the hoop).

LSU of course got the win in the end

no reason for it. If I'm Will Wade I put my best defender on him and follow him if he goes to the rest room. Frustrating that he put up 36 on us.

LSU’s best defender is on the bench with a broken foot and one of there other best is recovering from injury and Sat was his first game back

One of the points I really wanted to make is just how good Tyree is. He’s not 36 points good, he got there because LSU made some mistakes, but there were also a lot of times LSU did things right and he still put the ball in the hoop. He’s a really good player.

What I noticed is we let him get a quick 13 or 15 points. Before we could even catch are breath he got us, that's good gameplanning by kermit.

Look at what we did to Isaih Joe from arky, never let him get started. They got us, but we didn't let it beat us.

Too many times they did not deny him the ball out on the wing.
Tough to deny him, on ball screens, but no reason when he is standing alone at the wing.

It’s funny you say that because I had that exact same thought during the game. It was really early in the 2nd half, and he was standing on the right wing, Marlon had the perfect opportunity to play deny but didn’t even make an effort.

I can’t really remember them ever doing it to be honest.

We don’t have the depth to defend aggressively.

If one guy fouls out we’re playing walk-ons. I know Graves is now on scholarship but that’s beside the point.

Just need Taylor to recover fully and hope Manning can return at some point this season.

Joe Alleva has an evil smirk right now knowing he created our depth issues.

He's a great scorer and he made some tough shots. Not much you can do on some of those. But you're right. LSU's defensive approach most nights is inconsistent, AT BEST, and abysmal at worst.

At this point there is really no use in beating a dead horse. This isn't a good defensive team and I doubt they magically become one as the season goes along. They are going to have to keep winning by outscoring teams and crashing the offensive glass. The close games we've seen so far are going to be the norm simply because they are never out of a game due to their scoring ability. But they can't put teams away (prior to the final 90 seconds or so) because of their defensive inability

One thing I’m going to pay more attention to is how they defend at the rim. It isn’t a good way to determine how good a team is, but they’re actually better right now than they were last season with regards to blocking shots.

They’re 37th in the country with 4.7 a game, last season they were 59th at 4.3 a game. There’s a few clips in the video where they do a good job standing straight up in the paint, but I wouldn’t really say they’re contesting the shot.

Emmitt is coming on as a shot blocker, and that’s happening with much improved positioning and awareness. I do love our aggressive nature on the offensive glass. Straight dogs out there.

Taylor is still not 100% and Manning out. Our 2 best perimeter defenders. Marlon did what he could but until he is 100% we will lack some D on the perimeter.

I wouldn’t say fantastic, but he did a lot better than Skylar did early on.

Being lazy on defense in no way helps our depth problem. When we’re lazy on defense we either give up easy points or they miss and we have to scramble around trying to get a rebound since we were out of position to begin with and could not block out correctly. Properly guarding them on the perimeter uses a whole hell of a lot less energy than not doing so.

Okay, but you said that my comment about lacking overall depth was stupid.

We’re thin to begin with, and with Manning out and Taylor limited, if you think our roster is deep then you do you man.

Sure, the defense could be improved. But when you know that your team can’t afford for you to foul out, it impacts the way you play. That was my point.

If we’re going to discuss lazy effort, let’s talk about the turnovers on offense. Seems like half of them at least come on lazy passes that a D1 college player should know better than to attempt.

No, I said your comment that we don’t have the depth to defend aggressively was stupid stupid stupid. Sure being lazy and not defending a 3 point shot saves you energy at that moment, but as soon as it misses you are burning 3x the amount of energy trying to go for a rebound instead of being in position, turning around and blocking out. Plus since we aren’t a very good 3 point shooting team it may take us two possessions to make up the points we just let them have.
