This is a question for the older folks and not so much the dummies my age or close.
30 or younger please dont answer with the shite you got.
Why does the big 10 as a whole churn out coaches either former players or assistants at a high rate. What is it about the culture?
No I have no facts just random thought Im curious of.

the Midwest (of which most of the big 10 is in) has always churned out lots of coaches. I know their educational institutions are top notch but why they turn out so many top flight coaches befuddles me.

Nah. I love that I've found this place

Former SEC players make it in the NFL. Big 10 guys go into coaching because they can't play in the league.

You sure you don't have the MAC confused with the Big 10? Or 1-AA teams like Youngstown State?
Posted on 10/26/17 at 8:43 pm to Tiger Ree
I know of the Mac being another. I just know the big ten always has a strong group of coaches and assistants( coaching trees) even as I was growing up in 90s the big ten was the shite. I assumed I would get some logical grandpa answer but I've been let down by the rant. 1st time actually

The last two national champion coaches are from West Virginia and Alabama respectively.
The current Top 5 is composed of coaches from West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Alabama and Kansas.
Good coaches come from everywhere.
Miami of Ohio in particular has churned out some damn good coaches, and is known as the cradle of coaches. There is obviously a culture of excellence that has been passed down through the years. As they say, if you wanna be great surround yourself with greatness.

Don’t end a sentence with a preposition.

Simple social structure and economics. That part of the country is heavily populated, with a lot of blue collar workers in plants and factories. Not as much as it used to be, but still moreso than the South.
Football is both a social event for gathering the community, and a way out of that life. It has fostered a greater respect for the game, because it means more. It isn't just fun and games; look at Saban coming out of West Virginia. Man didn't want to work in a mine, or a factory or steel mill. So he embraced football the way students at West Point embrace military studies. That isn't a singular case, there are lots of guys up there like that. Some make it big, some stay at the lower levels.

Yep, it's an impressive list. Not a big 10 thing but it's certainly an Ohio thing.
Paul Brown
Woody Hayes
Don Shula
Chuck Noll
Ara Parseghian
Lou Holtz
Bo Shembechler
Urban Meyer
And our very own Les Miles.
I'm sure there are more. It's crazy.
