Has LSU ever had this much top-line talent in the NFL?
Posted by Jax-Tiger on 4/10/17 at 5:40 pm392
I can't recall in my lifetime, ever having so many players from LSU that were near the top for their position in the NFL.
Between Whitworth, Peterson, Beckham, Landry, Mathieu, Williams, and Hill, you have a number of Pro-bowl caliber players.
Whitworth and Williams are at the end of their careers, but up and coming stars like Kwon Alexander, Deion Jones, Vidal Alexander, and La'el Collins, coupled with guys like Leonard Fournette and Jamal Adams, I don't see a drop off.
I don't think I've ever seen so many LSU guys representing at such a high level...

This year's class leaving for the NFL is special. I think Adams becomes a Ed Reed type, Fournette will make an instant impact on the right team, White starts right away, and Polic is climbing the draft boards. Sleepers in this class are Riley and DeSean Smith that could make an impact in the NFL also. I know I am forgetting a few guys others.

I didn't want to get carried away, and call those guys tier 1 talent. I just remember for many years, we had a guy or two who would be considered a star, playing, but you really didn't see a lot of LSU guys who were featured on NFL broadcasts...

Remember last few years our supposed top draft picks have gotten in trouble. La el Collins and Jalen Mills. La el got screwed I know. Debo and Kwon were under valued by NFL scouts. Also Beckwith this year will make a name for himself too once he fully recovers.

Damn talent was here.

One thing you can't knock about Les Miles was his eye for talent. He could pick out the best recruits. Just unfortunate he went down with his buddy Cam bc they didn't want to change.
The Jason Taylor quotes about Cam pretty much sum it up. Add Miles to that and it's a shame. If he would have changed his ways, there would be multiple rings on his fingers, instead of just one.
ETA - I don't believe there has ever been more top talent from LSU than there currently is.

Miles' eye for top talent is overrated. All of those guys OP mentioned were 4 and 5 star recruits other than Mathieu. And most were from Louisiana. Any Coach would have tried to recruit them here.

You're such a dumbass.
A more correct statement would have been, "those guys turned in to 4 and 5 stars after offered by LSU."
But, it's the rant, I don't expect any of you idiots to give Miles any praise.

We had a great group with Hilliard, Smith, Norwood, Williams, Martin, Marshall, Andolsek, Hill, Davis, Brooks, Jackson, Thomas and that bunch late 80s 90s.

Those guys were solid, but weren't all playing at an elite level at the same time. Hilliard got hurt after a couple of seasons. Marshall was elite, obviously. Martin and Davis were solid, but neither was an Odell Beckham. Norwood and Andolsek died before they could fulfill their potential. Brooks had a decent career, as did Smith.
Not in the same league as the current group, IMO.

Miles doesn't identify talent. His assistants do
Hilliard was a pro bowler led the NFL in Tds (no current player has) Martin was the saints alltime leader in every receiving category (also not accomplished by any current player). Marshal was elite plus won Super Bowls so did Jackson. Eric Hill and Micheal Brooks were pro bowl types who played in Super Bowls. Henry Thomas played for one of the best front 4s in the last 30 years in Minnasota. Yes that group has accomplished as much and much more than the current group. Now does the current group have the ability to surpass them yes but they're nowhere close as of now.

What's crazy to me is that we have had several guys drafted in the top 10 over the last 10 years that did not have successful careers and don't get mentioned much when talking about Tigers in the NFL. Imagine if all those guys would have panned out and had pro bowl caliber careers (Claiborne, Dorsey, Jackson, Mingo, J Mar).

Our last 2 classes don't have big numbers but they are quality players. I think this year's class is gonna have some all pro players.
