gymnastics weekly team update:
Posted by Tigerbait357 on 1/24/18 at 1:47 pm576
Team has been back practicing all week and everyone looks good. Edney had an MRI on her knee after she tweaked it during warmups vs Bama. The scans came back clear! Whether or not she will compete in the all around this saturday will be meet time decision.
I'll now speak about what is happening on each rotation
Vault:
A lot of moving pieces now. This entire week, Cannamela and Finnegan have been doing 1 1/2's. The form is excellent in the air and they have a nice block off the table. Sticks are the last piece as of now but from what I see, do not be surprised to see them compete it this weekend vs UCLA.
Ruby had a nice practice on vault. Ruby's issues are all mental. Other than bars, she has self doubt and 'fake confidence' on every event. Once she overcomes it she will be an all star for us.
Lexi can do a 1 1/2 but DD doesn't want to push it. We will see.
Bars:
Same lineups will continue. Everyone looks phenomenal. IMO best bars lineup in the country when they hit. Durante has been phenomenal. Standley, Kirby and Dean also train extremely well on bars. Campbell has beautiful bars but the lineup is jam packed. Not much difference on this rotation.
Beam:
Desiderio has looked excellent as of late. She could do another dismount but we might not see it until later this season.
Campbell, there is some restructuring in her routine. Some of the connections are a bit tricky. She probably has one of the most difficult routines in terms of constant connections. She will rebound and be better this weekend. She was not happy about what happened last weekend.
Dean trains beam too and looks fantastic. Durante has a nice beam set and shows nice lines. Julianna and Kirby both do a lot of reps on beam. They look nice in practice, but we need to see it on meet day.
Floor:
This is a very busy rotation at the moment. Lexi Priessman and Desiderio are on the brink of making the floor lineup. The concern in Lexi's routine is her last pass on floor. Desiderio looks excellent on her double lay, second pass is the only question. Desiderio is bein pushed extremely hard, LSU knows they need her
Cannamela looks fantastic on floor. She continues to develop stamina. She ran out a little on that last pass vs Bama but she continues to improve.
Edwards continues to drastically improve. Floor can now hit a 9.9. Double back is much more controlled. Salto pass if she limits her bounce/step, she is fine.
Overall a lot of upgrades are in the works as of now. LSU wants to spend more than half the season working on it in real meets. Once vault catches up for LSU, LSU will be a team OU really needs to be careful about.

I’m excited that gymnastics has so much fanfare. It’s awesome for them. But man, I just don’t get it. It’s become LSU’s niche sport like women’s soccer is to A&M.

Develop an excellent program and spend years as an elite team, everyone will want to always stay up to speed on the programs. Its like this for softball now. Even mens golf too

Just say both sports are awesome and LSU kicks arse in both
In gymnastics news today, Larry Nassar was sentenced to 175 years in prison. I notice people make jokes in these threads about him but its not funny considering we have 8 ladies who have been treated by him multiple times over the year. They refuse to comment on him for a reason..

Gymnastics is alien to most of us who only knew it as the premier women's event every four years in the Olympics. When you have a child involved it takes on an entirely meaning and you see it through a different set o eyes. The nuances which separate a good score from a great score are subtle and , yes, sometimes subjective.
What is really impressive is the year long dedication and discipline required and the incredible skill sets these young ladies develop.
If you bleed purple and gold the atmosphere at the home meets is awesome.. The intro is electrifying and no doubt intimidating for the opponents. Then the deep and talented LSU gymnasts strut and swag like no other team in collegiate gymnastics including Oklahoma and Florida. The energy level is incredible in the arena.
It is reminiscent of the late 70s and early 80s when Dale Brown's basketball team was becoming a national power.

Nassar worked for USA gymnastics and everyone always directed kids his way because he was apparently a master at fixing people up.
We have a lot of gymnasts who competed as an elite and were national team members.
Lexi Priessman
Christina Desiderio
Sarah Finnegan
Erin Macadaeg
And more were around him and treated by him for years.
Many of them were invited to the ranch for national team camps and Nassar was always there to treat and "fix" people up.

yes, but both do work with each other at times

Can Lexie end with an easier pass than a double pike? The same question goes for Desiderio. Could she just have an easier pass. It would be better to get them on the floor than not to at all.
I can't wait to see the vault upgrades. Thank you again for all the updates.

Its a stamina issue for Lexie at the moment. When she is in shape she is a phenomenal floor worker. People don't realize, vault and floor were here specialties as an elite, not bars Plus we need to see if she can continuously endure the pounding that comes from floor routines.
As far as Desiderio, this routine is extremely watered down compared to her elite routine. Not sure specifically why the hold up on her but we aren't even at midseason so we still have a lot of time to break her in. It would be ridiculously appalling if she isn't in the floor lineup come March
I think we won't see ruby for the rest of the year on floor. She has already had two major screw ups in our first two meets on floor. She needs to focus on that vault. Which by the way, she had an awful block off the table so she didn't have any height.

I love it that Gnat is an assistant coach. What a racehorse.
