Re-watched the ending of the game and for the life of me I can’t figure out why Gus called the timeout with 28 seconds to go. It served no purpose.

LSU could still run the clock down to two seconds because it was only 3rd down. I would think a better decision would be to hold on to the time out and call it when Tracy is getting ready kick. Coaches do it all the time. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t. But still baffled why he used the time out with 28 seconds remaining.

Any ideas?

I posted the same thing on Sunday. He choked. He could’ve at least used a time out to try and freeze our kicker.
College kicker on the road in a pressure situation in a hostile environment. It was worth a shot to try and freeze him.

Probably to make LSU run a play on the 3rd down to A try and get a fumble and B to run the clock down instead of allowing them to run the clock down after the2nd down play call timeout with 6 or so seconds. Attempt the kick on 3rd down so if it is a botched snap you can fall on it and call timeout and try again in fourth down.

This is the only reasonable explanation.

im not convinced freezing works. Would love to see stats on it.

Kickers know several minutes before they kick that they're probably going to have to kick a game winner. I'm not sure another timeout makes a kicker any more nervous.

But it's conventional wisdom so coaches do it. I just don't think it makes a material difference.

Maybe he wanted to force the kick on 4th down rather than 3rd down. Take away the "if there is a problem with LSU's 3rd down there is still have 4th down".

Force LSU to run another play and kick on 4th down. Ultimately we lost three yards in an effort to run down the clock. Could have fumbled. Could have lost more.

Saving the timeout let's LSU kick on 3rd down without having to run another play.

ETA - I see this has already been covered.

Each situation is different so stats wouldn’t tell the story.
As I said it was certainly worth a shot with a college kicker in his first big time pressure situation in a hostile environment. May not work much in the NFL but in this situation it’s certainly worth a shot.
