UCLA football live blog: Bruins looking forward to home crowd

quote:

As expected, Jon Gaines II is listed as the starting center as Sam Marrazzo continues to work his way back from an undisclosed injury that has slowed him since spring practice. Marrazzo practiced Monday and would be evaluated as the week unfolded, coach Chip Kelly said, though he did not appear on the depth chart; redshirt freshman Bruno Fina was listed as Gaines’ backup.

Washington transfer Ethan Garbers has overtaken Chase Griffin as the top backup quarterback after a strong showing upon his arrival on campus. Griffin started two games last season and played admirably while starter Dorian Thompson-Robinson was in the COVID-19 contact tracing protocol.

Bo Calvert’s move to outside linebacker will result in a starting spot at inside linebacker for Jordan Genmark Heath, the transfer from Notre Dame, alongside Caleb Johnson.

Former running back Kazmeir Allen is listed as a reserve receiver, behind Texas A&M transfer Kam Brown.

quote:

No. 1 X receiver Delon Hurt is suspended indefinitely. The odds of him playing against LSU are as slim to none as it gets, with him dealing with legal issues related to an alleged sex crime. Although he caught only eight passes for 122 yards last season, Hurt is the No. 3 leading returning receiver.

quote:

The Bruins return 20 starters, 10 on each side of the ball, and junior quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson will trigger Kelly’s offense. UCLA finished 3-4 last year, with each of the losses by six points or fewer, so there are reasons to be optimistic.

The right side of their OLine is about to get steam rolled. WRs won’t be able to get off the jam. RB better be fast as frick our front 7 is nasty. Our defense matches up extremely well, UCLA is going to be throwing slants all game because nothing else will work. Safety play will be key in this game.

Their Defense, schematically, is begging us to run the ball down their throat. The freshman RBs better be ready to tot the freaking rock. We are going to straight up bully their front 7, Max should have ample time to pass facing a straight 5 man rush. The passing game should take advantage of the middle of the field considering our concepts and their defensive formation.

UCLA playing Hawaii is the worst possible thing for them as far as physicality and measurables comparatively to LSU. The first half is going to be a blood bath.

Their entire defense is seniors or redshirt seniors. Hopefully it means they aren’t good enough to go pro and not that they are mature and ready to maul.

But to quote Jeremy Hill- returning a bunch of bad players doesn't impress or scare me.

This game reminds me of the Miami game a few years back. Seems close on paper but they will be physically man-handled by superior athletes right from the first whistle to the last.

assuming Thompson-Robinson is the starter at QB:

2020 (only 5 games)
CMP ATT CMP% YDS AVG TD INT
90 138 65.2 1,120 8.1 12 4

2019
216 362 59.7 2,701 7.5 21 12

2018
112 194 57.7 1,311 6.8 7 4

lot's of PT and he looks to be a bit of a runner...

55 rushes for 306 yards in a 5 game season last year.

Also this guy on the DL looks impressive

6-4 320

from Katy, TX

also a very good shotput thrower

stats aren't spectacular but he is a big body to deal with for the OL.

DTR is a legit NFL prospect with a ton of experience. He's the type of kid who can take over a game.

Correct... We lose so many to the NFL, as you know.

I don’t like mobile QBs but hopefully this won’t be a problem for the D.

11 senior starters on defense. You don't see that too often.

That’s not good. For them.

That’s an interesting 2-4-5 defense they got there.

overlook them if you want. i remember similar threads about superior athletes manhandling seniors who weren't able to get drafted before the Wisconsin game a few years back

Fair enough. Front 7 is beefy and highly talented this year and this isn’t a Wisconsin OLine. Overconfidence in the eye test is ok guys, don’t piss all over it cuz you’re scared to be excited.
