Was Gary Crowton considered to be a good OC? I've been missing college football lately, and have watched 4 of the 2007 games in the last month. (Virginia Tech, Florida, Auburn, and Alabama). He seemed to call great games in those 4 games. I just remember thinking he was horrible through 2010.

he had a 5th year senior running the offense in 2007 who went on to set a record or two in the NFL

A 5th year senior at QB can help an OC look pretty good. Flynn was a stud

And then he had Jarrett Lee and Jordan Jefferson.

And a stubborn, hard-headed HC. Let’s not pretend the offensive struggles after 2007 were only because of the QBs and OC.

At most of his stops he had a great first year and then went downhill.

He called a great game in the BCSCG as well.

Had some creative play designs that fooled Ohio St.

Offensive struggles ...
remember the year that JJ was hurt and we went into ALA undefeated due to JL. He then threw an int and I do not know that ever played again.

When he was here, yearly stats from all of his OC gigs were posted a few times, and the trend was declining output over time.

Combine that with a HC who wanted to handcuff the O, especially after a rash of pick 6s under Lee in 2008.

He had Jordan Jefferson. Jefferson could not read a defense pre snap. He could hardly call the plays in the huddle. The offense had to be dumbed down so that JJ only had to understand one side of the field

Nope. He has a great first year everywhere he goes. Then defenses figure his schemes out and his offense gets worse every year. He needed to go.

Wrong on so many levels...

-Crowton not OC
-JJ suspended for kickboxing
-undefeated due to one of the greatest Tiger defenses ever with THE ultimate football playmaker
-Lee threw TWO INTs
-Lee absolutely played again (but not in BCS-CG)

But yes, you ARE correct that we went into (and came out of) the Bama game undefeated. Congrats on that one.

He played again because he threw 2 int in like 5 passes against Alabama.

good OC, not good at developing QBs. and in a way, I used to think he tried to get too cute way too often.

sometimes it was ok to run the same plays until an opponent showed they could stop it, but Crowton would try to run every damn thing in the playbook. that really hurt Lee's development IMO. you can't ask a RS freshman to run the offense like a 5th year senior. especially given that he had really good OL and running game to lean on.

Crowton was a great offensive mind and playcaller. His issues were his inability to develop a QB to save his life. Guy was atrocious at it. He was always successful when he had a seasoned QB then went off the rails.

Unfortunately for him, in college football you have to be able to develop young QBs to succeed in the long term.

GC used a lot of formations, but didn't seem to subscribe to constraint football, as in running successful plays until defense has to adjust to stop them, then counter.
He mostly ran plays without rhyme or reason, imo.
