Gary Crowton and 2007

The Ryan Perriloux interview got me thinking about the 2007 season, and isn't it funny that Gary Crowton of all people is a national championship OC. I will say his game plan against Ohio State was awesome, but only a smart, fifth year senior like Flynn could have pulled it off probably.
I vividly remember an Oregon fan posting on the boards right after we hired him, saying something like: He'll look great in his first year, then his offenses will get more and more atrocious as people get film on him. Boy, was that guy right! I think we all recall 2009. Of course, when your choice of QB is either a shell-shocked Jarrett Lee or an athletic but extremely erratic sophomore Jordan Jefferson, your chances of running a dynamic spread attack are slim to none.

People forget how bad Crowton’s offense was. And at the time they talked about how he kept a lot of Jimbo’s offense in 2007 because he had So many upperclassmen and it was so effective he didn’t want to change everything at once.
Say what you will about Les, at the end he had that offense more closed up than a 1950s father, but Crowton’s acheme wasn’t 1950s football. It was just bad.

Watching highlights from 06 and 07, I’ve seen many of the same plays run in both seasons. Crowton brought in new passing concepts and a few different formations. I think his biggest impact was play calling. It makes me mad that we never seemed to run the WR bubble screen after Jimbo left.

ETA: Fixed OP. Thanks for catching. Didn't say what I meant to say.

Didn’t RP “pull it off” against Tennessee in the SECCG? Not a fifth year senior

I was specifically talking about the creative game plan they ran in the BCS title game. Remember, Ohio State had the No 1 defense in the nation that year, and we put 38 on them.
ETA: They gave up 12.8 ppg and 233 ypg that year. That includes the 326 yards we had and 38 points. For reference, the next best defense that year, USC, gave up 16 ppg and 273 ypg.

The defense won that game.

Remember Keiland Willams long run vs Virginia Tech in 07? That came from this exotic formation at the time called The Pistol.
Crowton was being called `The Wizard` for his innovative play calls. Its funny how 3 years later they couldn't even get the ball snapped before the play clock ran out.

It was precisely because of too many formations that they couldn't get the ball snapped. They started running multiple WRs into the huddle with like 12 seconds left and the clock running.

That’s cause Miles thought the Crowtons offense was to risky. Miles is the one who held Crowton and the offense back.....

I remember reading an interview with Crowton where he admitted that the 07 offense was just Jimbo's with a few new spread concepts thrown in. It looked awesome because those 5th year seniors had been running it their entire career.
2008 came and we didnt have the majority of those guys, Crowton started to implement more of his own barbaric schemes and we saw where that got us. It was so ugly and unorganized I remember many rages against the TV.

2010 Tennessee end game was the closest by far I ever came to putting my fist or a brick or something through my television set. I mean, I came very close to doing it. I remember I was watching in our upstairs game room which sort of overlooked our neighbor's driveway, and I remember seeing them in the driveway after the game. I thought to myself that I hope they don't call the cops on me for the things they assuredly heard me screaming through the closed windows.
They were more like guttural utterances than screams, actually. I mean, in hindsight, why get mad about somebody trying to substitute the entire set of skill players with no timeout, the clock running from :30 to :00, a 2nd down in your pocket so an easy spike situation and an inability to actually get a play off in that entire time? It seems silly now.

I loved his substitutions/formations in 07. For some reason he stopped doing that later

A good friend of mine knew Crowton and Crowton complained that he wasn’t allowed to run the offense he wanted the way he wanted. I don’t think we ever fully saw his offense.

Crowton was an animal in Ruston - unreal numbers back in the day.

Crowton ran bubble screens all 2007, by 2008 the other teams figured out he was running the same plays out of different formations

The defense, Zenon quick six, saved our arse.
