From an NC State fan: First LSU game (10/11 v. Florida) - Suggestions
Posted by roadblkx on 10/2/19 at 12:46 pm550
My wife and I live in Charlotte, NC and are meeting up with a friend in Baton Rouge for the game (we are in NO for the weekend)! Can NOT be more excited about this match-up - excited to see some real powerhouse SEC football and some incredible tailgating. I've heard nothing but good things about Death Valley and am looking forward to donning purple Sat. I enjoy NC State's tailgating but I fully expect this to be a whole different level...
To that point, I was hoping some of y'all would be able to help give me some pointers on parking, tailgating, cool bars ... game-day stuff. Not familiar with the area at all and will be renting a car and driving up early afternoon. Just looking to get a good sense for the vibe and would welcome tips from any of you on what best to plan on in order to get the full experience.
Geaux Tigers!

donning purple Sat.
Wear an NC State hat or shirt. Enjoy the free food and booze.
Some things to definitely do while you're in town:
Must do's:
Tour the Old State Capital and New State Capital downtown, and definitely take a ride to the observation deck on top.
Walk the LSU Lakes
Visit Mike the Tiger's Cage
See the Band March down the hill about 2 hours before the game
Walk around in your own team's colors around different tailgates. Talk to people, take some gentle ribbing with humility, and let them feed you and fill you with booze.
Other possible activities in Baton Rouge:
Live After 5 concert at the Galvez Plaza
Rock n Rowe concert at Perkins Rowe
Top Golf at Siegan Marketplace
Main Event by the Mall of Louisiana is a good spot if you have kids/teenagers. It has bowling, laser tag, and an arcade
Red Stick Social (bowling alley/bar/restaurant right outside of downtown)
Hitting up mid-city thrift and antique stores (if that's what you're into). There's several along government street including Time Warp Boutique, Circa 1867, The Pink Elephant, and Alladin's Lamp.
If you have kids, the Knock Knock museum is another great spot by City Park.
Some fun activities around, but not in, Baton Rouge:
Drive up to St. Francisville and visit The Myrtles Haunted Plantation. If you do this, I also recommend getting some boudin and bbq from the Francis smokehouse.
Angola Prison Rodeo on sunday
plantation tours at Laura, Oak Alley, and Houma's House
Get shitfaced in the French Quarter/Frenchman Street in New Orleans. If you’re looking for a more alternative nola scene, hit up the bars on St. Claude like Hi-Ho, the Always Lounge, and Carnaval. Tipitina’s always has great shows so check them out and see who’s playing. Maple Leaf Tavern, Rock n Bowl, the Avenue Pub, Bachanal, there’s no shortage of great places to pass a good time in New Orleans.
Teddy's Juke Joint in Zachary for a unique delta blues club experience
Places to drink/hangout:
The Chimes (beer bar north of campus)
Tin Roof Brewery (between campus and downtown)
Happy's (live bands on the patio Downtown)
Dead Poet (original music south of campus)
Ivar's/Duvic's (Perkins Overpass Area)
Fred's (Tigerland college bar experience)
Walk-on's (sports bar with food south of the stadium. It will be packed on gameday, and will also have a band after the game)
Places to eat:
The Chimes/Parrain's (owned by the same people with basically the same menu)
Ruffino's
Louisiana Lagniappe
Roberto's River Road
Else's Plate & Pie
Overpass Merchant
Louie's (late night/brunch)

No offense to OP at all; but can someone get Chicken to do a permanent link to a guide for visiting fans or something?
I love that all these people want to come to an LSU game, and definitely bring them on. But I mean, heck, we just had one of these threads yesterday from an Oregon fan; and it would be more useful to do it that way.

Man, this is the third or fourth one of these threads in the past day.
It’s like LSU gets an offense and everyone goes on a pilgrimage to Baton Rouge to see the miracle.
You’ll find what you’re looking for here.

ETA: enjoy the trip, we look forward to hosting you.

Yes, because these threads are SOOO terrible, compared to the:
- 5 threads per day started about the defense not being good.
- 8 threads a day in panic mode because OSU jumped us in the polls.
- 3 threads a day asking who will start at QB next year, because Brennan sucks.
- 4 threads a day about how it will be hot Saturday.
- 13 threads a day about what time a game in the future will be.
- 3 threads a day, started by Buckeye Joe, to repeat the same thing about Burrow as the day before.
Let these people have their moment in the spot light. They may have specific wants/needs that other visitors don't have. If you are tired of explaining it to them, just don't reply to the thread.

People will give you good advice here, and there are lots of threads you can find info in as well, but as an LSU alum married to an NC State alum, I'll just say that your high expectations will be exceeded and wish you a fantastic time. There is no place like Death Valley and no people like my people. Enjoy.

Try some good seafood—Ralph and Kakoos is just off the interstate near the mall—old haunt worth the wait! Tell ‘em Billy sent ya!

As an earlier post in this thread mentioned, you’ll want to head over well before the afternoon. I would try to arrive no later than 1-2pm and keep in mind that gameday traffic and parking can take a while to navigate.
I actually lived in an apartment in Raleigh overlooking the PNC Arena so I was within walking distance to NC State's stadium. Their tailgating seems more like how other NFL fans tailgate by sticking a popup tent outside their cars in parking lots.
Tailgating here is massive and spreads out almost 3 square miles filling every parking lot and grass spot available within campus. The experience is a little different seeing that NC State's stadium is separated from campus. It can be overwhelming. You will still see why people say we have the best tailgating in the country. Need to go check out Mike the Tiger and watch the band come down the hill before the game. That area around the PMAC, Indian mounds, and parade grounds will have alot of tailgating.

Thanks, guys great advice and am enjoying reading through the prior threads posted. I may just have to wear some NCSU gear as recommended - or at least a hat.
Two specifics:
1) where would you suggest I park coming from NO? My wife and I are mid 20s so happy to walk a bit is necessary, but don't want to be too far out.
2) This may be a ridiculous question (but not at NC State...) - do the cops crack down on open container laws for alcohol if you're walking around from tailgate to tailgate? since we are planning to be nomads during the day we are just bringing our own beer with us in-hand.
Thanks!

If it is something that you can control, I would try to get to campus by noon. This will help you avoid heavier traffic and to get in as much tailgating and soak up the atmosphere for as long as possible.

This crowd will be huge and arriving early, so do get there closer to 11 than 1:00; parking will be a premium so be prepared to walk a bit: note to your wife, wear walking shoes. Too, there are plenty of restrooms all around the campus but toilet paper runs out early, so bring some for her. Trust me. Do not worry about finding a restaurant to eat, wear your State colors and you will eat and drink for free all day. With it being the gators in town there will be a lot of fried alligator on the pits...tastes like chicken, go for it. You can drink and walk around but no glass containers. Forget all the off campus suggestions, you and your wife will not have a better time than Tiger Stadium tailgating. Normal drive time from N.O on game day is close to 1.5 hrs driving up to stadium parking. Easiest drive is Hwy. 30 left off I-10 & it will lead you straight to campus, no turns, and drive as far down as police barricades will allow. It will warm and humid, so dress comfortable. The Tiger Band coming down the hill pre game is worth the effort to try and catch, but crowds form early. Mike 's cage is right there and he will be in his cage all day. Post game, with a Tiger victory, the tailgating will be just as big and louder.
Cops only enforce open containers on 3rd Street, never around campus on gameday. I would try parking near the UREC. That will give you relatively easy access to Stanford Avenue and I-10. However, it does fill up relatively early.
I have been going to LSU games for 25 years. Always have a drink in my hand. Never once has any cop came up to me and stated anything. That's the last thing you have to worry about.
Your going to have a blast ! Wear your colors and represent. Just hate the gator's and you will be fine!

Don't follow this advice unless you have a parking pass. For as big as this game will be, be there no later than 9-10 to make sure you can park and have time to soak it all in.

This should be the least of your worries. Obviously, just don't bring glass bottles of beer. The cops will not tell you a damn thing unless you are A) having a glass bottle B) being totally out of control. Like out of control beyond what you can imagine.
