The lulz are a plenty.

O can't recruit

Let us remember that this is the class that brought us the greatest college team of all time.

I'll start with the callouts:

SpqrTiger:

quote:

If LSU recruits itself, then this year’s recruiting disappointment should tell you what recruits think of LSU.

We are not a dynamic football program or a hot school anymore. There is zero momentum on campus right now.

A1tiger

quote:

LSU usually does recruit itself, except when you have the most unqualified head coach and OC in the history of football. That put a pretty big damper on reputation and status. With an average coach, this class would have been better. Not many outside of LA want to join this circus.

Both these men are still at those positions.

Some good hot takes there for sure!

But, it wasn't a particularly strong class either.
Of the 22, 8 have left the team.
A core of 14 is not great.

Signing day is when the worst of the worst rantards show up in spades to shitpost on the recruiting board.

Of the 22 only 7 will really contribute this year. The 2018 class will in all likelihood go down as coach O's worst recruiting class at LSU.

To be fair.... Marshall and Chase are the only real contributors from that class. It was NOT a good class. Burrow was not on the team at the time of that legitimate (IMO) melt and the vast majority of big time players from last year's team were from the year before or the year after. Curry, Hines, Rosenthal, and Baskerville will probably be the only others besides Chase and Marshall to play meaningful minutes going forward. So... 6 players? I think both sides were right on some points. Bad class.. but O did all he could to turn it around and it will remain an anomaly.

Let’s be honest, even with the benefit of hindsight it was pretty low to see a Louisiana legacy and silent commit get plucked late by Saban.

It’s so ironic that the recruiting shortcomings are what allowed us to exploit the grad transfer rule and hit homeruns. It obviously wasn’t planned but God was shining on our arse is all you can say.

Remember we had just lost to Troy and got embarrassed by Miss St in our worst loss to that program in over 100 years. It was pretty low and that fizzle on signing day punctuated things.

That’s just a realistic assessment of the program at the time. You can’t say there wasn’t reason for serious concern. Luckily, God intervened and gave Ed a break.

Just called it like I saw it, when I saw it.

I was clearly wrong about the class and O’s ability to evaluate players that I did not know much about, obviously.

O has turned the program around in a big way. He deserves a ton of credit, and I’m happy to give it to him.

It was a subpar class, LSU won despite it not because of it.

You know, just going through my bookmarks and re-reading a bunch of those old threads, we don't get nearly enough credit for knowing more about football than the detractors.

One thread I was repeatedly called a troglodyte with a retards knowledge of football by Fat Bastard.

I was right. He was completely wrong.

Exactly this. Very few contributors when you see a class like 2017

The 2017 class is the one that is primarily responsible for the natty. We had about 18 players in that class who were big contributors. The 2018 class is weak by comparison. It looks like it will only produce about 10 - not bad, but not championship level. Luckily we got back on track in 2019, a class that is trending towards about 16 big contributors. I disagree with your premise.

it seems to me that this indicates o's coaching ability. he was able to take that and mold everything into 2 really good teams - one perhaps the best ever
