Finley/Johnson are promising, but we needed Brennan in 2020

Brennan played Mizzou and State (exclude Vanderbilt) with this same O-line, the running game yielded 2.2 yards/carry in those games. Brennan averaged 387.5 yard/game.
Last three games, our running game has averaged 2.1 yard/carry. In that span our passing game has averaged 283 yard/game. This includes garbage time yards against Auburn and A&M's last drive.
That is 100 less passing yards per game with Brennan out.
However, we bash Finley and Johnson way too much. Those two would have much better stats with simply an average offensive line, which would also improve our running game. A&M knew they just had to defend the short passes.
Jennings, Harris, Jefferson, Etling had better offensive lines and running games, yet they couldn't move the ball through the air much (Les Miles factor in there, but still...).
Finley/Johnson/Nuss are a bright future, 2021 can't get here soon enough, but we need to land O-line big fish.

people have to remember that MJ and TJF are TRUE FRESHMEN that had no spring acclimation. I can't recall and true freshman QB in my lifetime coming in and lighting it up. I've seen RS Freshmen do it, but true freshmen? no way. especially ones that did not have a spring

Offensive can't block anybody, we ran for 36 yards,
it doesn't matter who the QB..
nothing happens with a garbage OL...we have a transfer from Harvard for God's Sake...do you see Alabama going to the Ivy league for Players.

I am a Brennan fan, but there is no way to make any comparison between performances given the GREAT disparity in talent levels of defenses faced. Period.

Very few play and excel as true freshman.
In the SEC, Jalen Hurts and Jake Fromm did it, but they also had incredible teams offensively and defensively. Lawrence did it with Clemson, but he also had a phenom RB with him along with an incredible team. Most guys who have have a lot of success as true freshman QBs have a stellar supporting cast (with some exceptions here and there).

Tua taigovailoa played limited in the regular season and came in and dominated on the biggest stage to win a national championship.

Bro y’all kill me with the stat average comparison. Score more points than the other team and win the game. Not one persons average from the previous games helped them win the current game

Brennan is the only reason that I am looking forward to next year. That and hopefully an improved defense.

Yeah, there are certainly exceptions, but, like you said, the ones who have had great success have had championship teams around them. Hurts was the first true freshman to start for Alabama in 32 years, so that should tell you something. I wouldn't, however, say that Jake Fromm lit it up. He averaged 174 ypg and 1.6 TDs per game his freshman season. They didn't ask him to do much because they had two running backs rush for over 1200 yards and arguably the best OL in college football. We have essentially no running game and a swiss cheese OL, yet our freshman QBs are averaging a combined 295 ypg and 1.5 TDs per game. They're playing like true freshman, so I think any people on here saying anything is "clear" as to their potential going forward are being unreasonable. Both guys have shown they have a lot of potential and the tools to be good QBs in this league. They've just been thrown into about as crappy a situation as you'd ever ask of a true freshman. Even the all-time great Peyton Manning struggled plenty when he was forced to play his true freshman season when Todd Helton went down to injury.

If a guy like Tua is the bar by which all freshman are judged, then there's very few freshman college football players that will ever live up to that. Comparing the #1 QB coming out of high school and playing with a team full of All-Americans isn't in the same universe as what our freshman are dealing with.

Our starter for 2021 isn’t currently on the roster

only the fans that truly have no concept of how much faster the game is at the sec level compared to high school.

Brennan back next year while Nussmeier preps for the future. Either this offseason or next you ask Finley and Johnson to look around. With Brennan, Nussmeier, and Howard we are set for the next few years. Hats off to Finley and Johnson for giving their all this year but neither are SEC QB’s and we are not competing for titles with either.
