Explain Turnaround In Women's Basketball
Posted by FreeState on 1/13/17 at 6:40 am03
Could it be that we brought in Mickie DeMoss, who nobody talks about?
More players, fewer injuries?
Are we really pretty good?
I don't keep up much but now that we seem to be so much better than the past couple of years I was curious.

Relatively weak schedule thus far. Only played two ranked teams and was destroyed by both.
We'll get another chance to assess this team on Sunday against USC.

They had a rotation of 6 players last year

Mickie is that you?

DeMoss has helped. They're much much healthier. Jackson has given them another scorer who can hit from 15 ft out. Hill, Norton, and Rhodes aren't counted on to create and score anymore so they can just play D, slash to the basket, run the court, and hit occasional open jumpers. The whole team is playing great defense. The schedule hasn't has been a complete bear but we've got a top 30 SOS.

they were down to about 6 players last year
demoss has definitely been a big help on the bench
just like starkey was the coach behind the scenes for both gunter and chatman

3 things:
1) Player availability - Jackson couldn't play as a transfer last year and Moncrief was injured. They are available this year. Keep in mind, we had a softball player getting minutes due to desperation. Especially with the dismissal of an all sec caliber player.
2) Defense - with the teams matchup zone they are creating pressure on the perimeter to offset either teams' ability to run their offense and allows for a lot of contested shots, hence misses by opponents.
3) Execution of High Risk High Reward Opportunities - since they run an aggressive match up zones, they jump passing lanes and go after steals leading to transition opportunities. Plus, they create quick midrange shots and drives in their halfcourt offense in order to keep the opponent from setting up defensively.
Teams with great athletes like State or who have great guard play due to effective ball movement are the only ones who will give them problems. But those are your elite teams. We're a solid competitive team since we don't have great interior play.

Can Mickie help Johnny out?
I am sure that DeMoss has helped, but Caldwell can coach. The problem has been getting players. There was a lot of resentment when Pokey was fired, but that had to happen. The "old guy' left the cupboard bare so to speak. If Caldwell can get players, she will win. We would be even better with Ballard, bur she had to go too.

Current NCAA Women's Hoops Rankings
They have a win over NC State who is ranked 22 in the poll.
RealTime RPI Link
RealTime RPI has their strength of schedule, to this point, 26 out of 349 Division-I Women's Basketball Teams.
Sagarin's RPI Link
Sagarin's has their strength of schedule, to this point, 23 out of 349 Division-I Women's Basketball Teams.
So when you say they have had a relatively weak schedule, the numbers do not back up your statement.
They have played 5 Top 40 teams (UConn, Mississippi St., Kansas St., NC State, and Tulane) going 2 - 3.
Overall, this team lacks height and 3 pt. shooting, but plays their heart out, night in and out. 14-3 (3-1) in the SEC after last season's struggle is a great sign. This may not be the Augustus, Fowles, Temeka Johnson era, but give credit where credit is due.

Johnny isn't the coach.

I second all of that. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
We have to give Nikki credit for being a very good coach. As we have stated ad nauseum, the problem has been recruiting. It appears that we may be picking it up in that area as well. This is a feisty team. They're not as talented as teams we've had during the final four days, but they do play HARD. I can appreciate that. Once we meld that style of play with more talent, we'll be a consistent top ten program again.

Thanks for a realistic response. For many. Coach Fargas was fully to blame the last couple of years for the losses, despite the injury situation and limited bench. Now, some want to give the credit to DeMoss for the wins.
Anyone questioning Coach Fargas coaching ability hasn't been watching or refuses to give her any credit. And anyone watching knew her coaching actually overcame her limited players. The one thing she could be blamed for is inadequate recruiting. But recruiting has picked up a bit. If she can improve recruiting, her coaching skills will make the women's program soar.

It would be hilarious if O and Fargas turned out to e phenomenal hires in the end, and Jones is replaced by a solid hire. This board wouldn't know what to do with themselves

also are we ever going to see the Deemer girl again?

Good question.
I've been wondering why she doesn't seem to get a lot of minutes. It might be because her defense sucks....................or more importantly, her EFFORT on defense sucks. I dunno. The only thing she seems to do when she comes in is shoot three pointers.
